Paula Fern Nance was born on October 13 of 1938 in Portales, New Mexico to a loving father and mother, James Vestal and Ruth Naomi Langford during the final stages of the Great Depression and the terror of WWII. As you can imagine, this was the best and worst of times. Along with two older siblings, Eldon and Edwina, the Langfords provided for their family and it was an act of faith in God. James Vestal, also known as JV, was a preacher in the Nazarene church. JV and Ruth imparted their faith and beliefs in God to their children through everyday living. This faith and belief system was ever present in Paulas life. She lived a Christian life, and her beliefs were known to others in her everyday interactions. Paula excelled in school where she was the Valedictorian and Homecoming Queen. Her husband to be, Hershall Nance, was on the football team. As Cupid or fate usually does, they were drawn to each other and married in 1957 in Bethany, Oklahoma. Paula moved to San Diego, California to join her husband as he finished his stint the US Marine Corp. Paula and Hershall moved back to Oklahoma and started their lives. In 1960, Paula gave birth to her first of two sons, Scott Nance. During this time, Hershall started a construction company and became an OKC Firefighter. Craig Nance was born in 1968 to the delight of his brother. Paula was a wonderful mother to her two mischievous boys. She was often gullible to their pranks but could pull some of her own as well such as letting them mistake turnips for potatoes. Paula was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren who called her Nana. They have great memories of their time with her. She made her time with them special such as throwing a tea party, trail rides, singing at the piano, and living-room dance parties. Paula worked for Aero Commander handling payroll. She also worked for Xerox where she rose within the ranks and held the esteem of her co-workers and bosses. While at Xerox she led a group called the Kool-aides and made work fun for her colleagues. Paula was a talented musician, playing the piano and organ. She used these gifts frequently by playing for her church. She and her sister, Edwina, would sing wonderful praises to God, bringing Him glory. Their songs and lives would be a source of inspiration to her family and others both then and now as we look back in reflection. Paula and Hershall enjoyed their 50s as they found time to go on trail rides with her beloved horse, Drifter, and their friends and granddaughters. They took a cruise to Alaska and visited various other parts of the US. She was a strong woman and met each life challenge including becoming a breast cancer survivor. At the age of 64, Paula was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which ultimately caused a severe stroke leaving her paralyzed on her right side. While this limited her in many ways, Paula could still sing, play dominos and various board games, laugh on queue when someone shared a funny story or told a joke, and would return an "I love you too" when we said I love you. That added extra word "too" doesnt seem like a lot, but it is everything. She has touched many lives over the years with her love, understanding, gifts and love of God and Christ. Paula was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hershall Nance; and brother, Eldon Langford. She is survived by her son, Scott Nance and wife Barbara of Flower Mound TX; son, Craig Nance and wife Connie of Piedmont OK; grandchildren, Chelsea Nance, Jordan Nance, Colton Nance and Porter Nance; sister, Edwina McKellips of Bethany OK; brother-in-law, Odie Nance and Kay Barker; sister-in-law, Carol Langford of Tyler TX; sister-in-law, Patty Nance of Oklahoma City, OK; sister-in-law, Linda Nance of Edmond OK; aunt, Dorothy Langford of Bethany OK; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
