Paul Olaf Scheie was born June 24, 1933 and died May 27, 2020. He was the son of Olaf Johann and Selma Scheie. He was born in Marietta, Minnesota, at the home of his grandparents, Peder and Sarah Varhus.
He attended public school in Gonvik, MN, and Raymond, MN. He earned a B.A. in physics from St. Olaf College, a M.S. in physics from the University of New Mexico, and a Ph.D. in biophysics from The Pennsylvania State University. He taught at Oklahoma City University, Pennsylvania State University, and Texas Lutheran University. He was a visiting professor at the University of Bergen, Norway. His research was on electrophysiology of the integument of the insect (cockroach), surface tension of liquids, and scanning electron microscopy. He was a member of several professional organizations.
He was a teacher. Scientific research was interesting and fascinating to him as he learned about how the world and the universe worked. but his preference was teaching.
On May 18, 1963, Paul and Mary Anna Harrison were married. They had two children, Eric and Maren, and a grandson, Jean-Luc. As a family, they enjoyed activities that entailed learning new things for each of them as well as traveling. Music was a part of the life of their family. They all played in a band or two, except Mary Anna who favored vocal music.
His hobbies included whittling, carving, furniture making and refinishing, gardening, painting, and cooking Norwegian foods. His desserts were delicious, the carvings were ingenious, while his art was fun for him.
He served as Cubmaster of the troupe that his son was a member of, served on church committees and councils, and held memberships in several professional organizations. After retirement, he volunteered at the Science Museum of Oklahoma, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Anna; his son, Eric; his daughter, Maren; and grandson, Jean-Luc Frechette. Also, by his brother, Carl, and wife Mary; nephews, Dan, Tim, and Andy and wife Lisa; grand-nephews and grand-nieces; cousins, Sarah Hill, Dan and Mark Varhus and their families.
Memorial service will be Tuesday, June 30, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel.
