Opal Mae Baumeister died Sunday, October 29th at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Opal was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Walter Emmet Baumeister. She is survived by her sons, Terry Baumeister and wife Jane, and Jerry Baumeister and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Tara Shreffler and husband Eric, Ty Baumeister and wife Kristi, Cathleen Guthery and husband Harley, and Karen Baumeister; and great-grandchildren, Zeke Shreffler, Grace Shreffler, Colton Guthery, Maci Baumeister and Noah Baumeister.
Opal was born Opal Mae Brown, the 6th child of Harry G. Brown and Myrtle Sims in a small house on Stewart Street in Britton, Oklahoma on March 29th, 1921. In her school days at Britton High School, she was an excellent athlete and was the team captain on most of the teams as well as the homecoming queen her senior year. Later in life, she was an avid golfer who won many tournaments and remained competitive well into her 80s.
She married Walter (Wally) Baumeister on June 23rd, 1942, several days before Wally reported for active duty in the Army. During WWII, she worked at Douglas Aircraft until Wally returned from service. After Wally returned, they built a house on Council Road where they lived for over 70 years.
Opal was a longtime member of Putnam City Baptist Church and taught intermediate Sunday school for many decades. She was dedicated to her family and especially her sons.
