Oletha Slack, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed from this world on Saturday, August 6, 2011, in Tulsa, OK at the age of 94. Oletha was born in Wayne County Indiana on August 1, 1917 to Albert and Leonora Balsmeier. Her father and mother were both Nazarene evangelists. She graduated May 30, 1939 From Bresee College (now Southern Nazarene University) in Hutchinson, Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree. On June 1, 1939, she married Rev. Darrel Slack. In their ministry they served churches in Emporia, KS, Wellington, KS, Gary, IN, Warr Acres, OK, Billings, MT, and Cheyenne, WY. They also served as district superintendent of the Rocky Mountain District for several years and eventually retired to Nampa, Idaho. Oletha was a faithful ministers wife. She worked for a time at the Bethany Book Store but mainly dedicated herself to her family and the church. She loved to entertain and opened the parsonage for many social occasions. Oletha and Darrel were dedicated to their children; first Sharon, then 13 months later came Leland. They were always in attendance at any function their kids were participating in. Oletha was a loving mother and, in years to come, was a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. In her later years, after Darrels passing, she moved back to Bethany and lived at Southern Plaza for 10 years. While there, she was able to reconnect with many old friends and acquaintances. The last few years of her life were spent in Tulsa to be near her son, Leland, and his wife, Sally. Oletha is survived by her son, Leland Slack and his wife, Sally, of Tulsa; daughter, Sharon Hamilton of Belmont, CA; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Graveside services will be Friday, August 12, 9:00am in Bethany Cemetery.
