Olen Lonnie Riggs, Jr., age 85, went peacefully home to his Heavenly Father and wife, Ann (France), of 62 years. Olen was born the elder of 2 sons in Bethany, Oklahoma, to Lena (Sparkman) and Olen L. Riggs, Sr. on August 25, 1925. After graduation from Bethany High School, he immediately entered military service in the Army Air Corp (now the US Air Force). He trained as a navigator for the B-17 Flying Fortress and excelled so that he was transferred to Hondo Air base in Texas to train other navigators, as the shortage was great. At the end of WWII he returned to Oklahoma and for a semester was enrolled at the University of Oklahoma and played basketball under Coach Drake. He subsequently transferred to Bethany-Peniel College where he soon noticed a beautiful brunette named Ann France. They were married on June 3, 1947. After teaching in Ohio, for about 2 years, they moved to Quincy, Massachusetts where Olen completed his BS in Chemistry.
In the early 1950s he took a position with Conoco in their Research & Development Department where he produced many patents and inventions related to corrosion inhibition and instruments for measuring corrosion, one of which was a method of controlling corrosion called Anodic Protection. This was considered to be one of the most significant advances in the entire history of corrosion science. He co-authored a textbook on Anodic Protection which is used in universities around the world. In 1969, he accepted the position of senior research associate at Getty Oil and in 1971 he joined Kerr-McGee Corporation to provide research support for the corporate engineering materials problems. He accomplished much in developing water treatments and metal alloys and electrodes. His MnO2 electrode is still in place in a large Nevada plant which makes premium MnO2, which is used to power the batteries to which we are all so accustomed. During the past 20 years, he continued research and consultation through his own company, OLRAN.
While in Ponca City, he and his wife, Ann, were very active in the First Church of the Nazarene. He taught junior high Sunday school and coached grade school basketball with the YMCA. He has written and published hundreds of scientific papers and has over 70 patents to his credit. He was an active member of the National Association of Chemical Engineers, The American Institute of Chemists, The Electrochemical Society, and The International Society of Electrochemistry. His biography appears in American Men of Science, Whos Who in Technology, The American Science Registry, and Directory of World Researchers.
In all of this, he gave God the glory; he considered Him to be his Research Partner. While his accomplishments were many, these were small in his eyes compared to his devotion to his wife & family. He is survived by his daughter Debra Ann Riggs and husband J McCall Bundy; son Michael Olen Riggs and wife Debra Renae; grandchildren P.J. and Emma Riggs; nieces Sandra Riggs Badger and Shirley Riggs Evans; and many other extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, April 28 at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene with interment to follow in Bethany Cemetery.
