Norman Richard Dillard, 81, passed away on April 4, 2017, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born on June 17, 1935 in Concho County Millersview, Texas, to Elmer Lowe Dillard and Allie Bernice Campbell Dillard. He married Sharlene "Sue" Scott on August 19, 1955, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Norman graduated from Borger High School then Eastern New Mexico State University with a Bachelor's degree in Education, and from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Master's degree in Secondary Administration. He began his teaching career at Gaddis Jr. High School in Clovis, New Mexico. The Dillards moved to OKC where he taught at Hoover Jr. High School and then served as Principal at Hefner Jr. High School for more than 20 years. Norm was the Director for Teacher Certification for the State of Oklahoma and finally finished his career as Athletic Director for Sapulpa Public Schools. He was an active member of many professional educator organizations.
Norm and his family were long-time active members of Baptist Temple Church in OKC, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and wherever else he was needed! He also served with the Bethany Kiwanis for many years. He and his sons, Rick and Mike, were involved with Boy Scout Troop 84 and they shared many exciting and dangerous camping adventures together. Mr. Dillard lived his faith in such a personal and positive way that many people still sought him for advice and encouragement. Norman Dillard was a man of God and his family is forever grateful for the eternal spiritual heritage he exemplified.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Rick. Survivors include his precious wife of 61 years, Sue Dillard; his son, Mike and wife Joni; daughter in law, Cathy Dillard Byrum and husband Ronnie; grandchildren, Derick and wife Jill, Dan and wife Deena, Tara Palmer and husband Jake, Tony and wife Paige; one great grandson, Israel and one more on the way.
Viewing will be Thursday, April 6, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home in Bethany. His Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, April 7, at 10:30am with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Norman Dillard to Gideons International or Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch.
