NEVA HUGHES CUMMINGS
Neva Hughes was the third child born to Jodie and Ethel Hughes at Vernon, Texas on December 19, 1924.
Her family moved to the South plains of Texas to a farm near Plainview when she was 2 years old.
Neva attended a rural two-room school for the first six years of her education. In the seventh year, all the small rural schools consolidated with the Petersburg School system and she rode a school bus 15 miles every morning and 15 miles every afternoon until she finished high school on May 22, 1942. In June of 1942, she entered Lipperts Business College in Plainview, Texas. In April of 1943, she took a civil service exam and was employed at the Engines Branch, Amarillo Air Force Base. While working there, Neva met Roy Cummings who was the testing instructor of the Engines Branch. In 1945, Roy was shipped overseas and returned in September of 1946. On October 17, 1946, Neva married Roy and their first home was in Gulfport, Mississippi. Roy was employed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Neva worked for the Mississippi Power Company while living there.
In 1949, Neva and Roy moved to Denver, Colorado. Roy was employed at Lowery Air Force Base. Their first child, Peggy Sue, was born on March 4, 1950 at St. Joseph Hospital, Denver, Colorado.
On December 23, 1951, Neva, Roy and Peggy Sue moved into their new home in Amarillo, Texas. On May 8, 1953, their second child, Nancy Gail, was born at Northwest Hospital, Amarillo, Texas.
Neva trusted Jesus as her personal Savior on April 12, 1958 at the First Baptist Church during a revival with Angel Martinez. She was baptized by Hal Upchurch at Temple Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas.
Neva was a primary worker in Bible School, Sunday School and Training Union. She also worked as a room mother for the school and a Brownie Scout leader.
In August, 1962, Neva, Roy, Peggy and Nancy moved to Akron, Colorado to operate a six lane bowling alley. While in Akron, Neva contacted the pastor of the Southern Baptist Church in Brush, Colorado and asked, "Why cant we have a church in Akron" With the help of the area missionary out of Denver and Pastor Bill Beene from Sterling, Colorado, church services were started in Akron. Services were held on Sundays at 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM in the Seventh Day Adventist Church building.
In February of 1963, Roy, Neva, Peggy and Nancy moved to Oklahoma City. While there, Neva worked at Grants Department Store, for Dr. Petree, Dillards Department Store, and the Lung Association.
Neva was able to see both Peggy and Nancy graduate from high school and college and see them happily married.
Neva and Roy were blessed to have three grandchildren, Renee and Brian Colvert and Abbie Churchill-Conway.
Roy retired in 1976 and they traveled from coast to coast and shore to shore with a fifth wheel recreational vehicle to see the U.S.A. In the winter months, they would go to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas around McAllen and Pharr. They eventually bought a mobile home in a senior retirement park called Pharr South. They enjoyed the activities of the park, especially the square dancing.
