Naomi Ruth (Toepfer) Reust Tidwell
Naomi was born as the fourth child of Ernest Louis and Gertrude (Snethen) Toepfer in Kingfisher, OK on November 10, 1924, and died in Oklahoma City on Saturday, November 26, 2022. Naomi spent the majority of her life serving Jesus, family, her church, and employers. Naomi was born in Kingfisher and raised in a devout Christian family; so much so that the Kingfisher Church of the Nazarene was organized in a tent on their farm to the southwest of Kingfisher in the Park Community. Later, her family members gathered stones and helped construct the Nazarene Church in Kingfisher.
Growing up in the Toepfer household they used a hand-pumped well and a cistern caught rainwater. They had an outhouse, kerosene lamps for light, and wood stoves for cooking and heat. Naomi rode to school in a horse-drawn buggy from the age of five until she was old enough to ride a pony with her brother James behind, until the family got a Model A Ford. She went to High School in Omega and rode 37 miles in an unheated bus with a wooden cabin. Her mother made padding for the bench seats along each side. Her favorite subjects were math, music, and typing.
Naomi moved to Bethany, OK for college and resided there for the remainder of her life. She clearly remembered Pearl Harbor Day. During her Junior year at what is now Southern Nazarene University, she dropped out due to appendicitis which kept her down for months. This was during WWII, and she said all the good doctors were gone to war, so she had to use the one who was left. This led to a near-death experience in which she and several departed relatives watched and heard from above, as the doctor shouted at the nurse to "watch the gauges." The war also caused a shortage of teachers, so she taught high school Algebra and Calculus in Newcastle, OK for a year or two. She worked for Myers & ODonnell and CH Guernsey civil engineering companies as office manager and engineering technician. She prepared environmental reports and participated in municipal water, sewer, road, and airport design projects across Oklahoma for many years.
After WWII, Naomi was married to the late Joel B. Reust from July 15, 1946 until December 19, 1974. Their three children are Harold Eugene, Dennis Keith, and Nancy Joleta Reust. Harold lives in El Reno, OK and blessed her with grandchildren Melissa Lynn Meek, Gregory Scott, Brent Andrew, and Tony Dustin Reust, seven great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. Dennis lives in Stillwater, OK with wife Thea Helen (Carlson) and blessed her with grandchildren Michael Marsh, and Derek Keith Reust (deceased), stepson, Jesse Carlson, and six great-grandchildren. Nancy lives in El Reno, OK with husband Miles F. Gillidette and blessed her with grandchildren Niki Jo Spohn and Talia Lea Hubbard, five great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Naomi was a charter member of Eastside Church of the Nazarene in Warr Acres, OK where she taught Sunday School for 50 years and sang in the choir. Into her 90s she could sing all verses of about 400 hymns from memory. She wrote numerous poems, several in response to important events. Naomi recited her own and other poetry from memory until her final year. Her memory was always sharp.
The last of Naomis four homes in Bethany was built on North Mueller Ave. in 1983 by her son, Harold. She took meticulous care of her home, and it was warm and welcoming to all that visited. She encouraged visitors and hosted gatherings for many occasions. She moved to Southern Plaza Retirement Center in 2015 and enjoyed being with friends and her brother there.
Naomi was married to Harry F. Tidwell Sr. May 1, 1992 until his death July 12, 2008. They traveled and had great adventures together.
Naomis sister, Ida "June" Vogt, lives in Wichita, KS and sister, Martha Louise Stagner, lives in Ringling, OK. Sisters, Edith Mae Nice and Gertrude "Evelyn" Clason are deceased; brothers, Ernest "Loran" Toepfer, James Conrad Toepfer, Charles David Toepfer, and Paul Amos Toepfer are deceased.
