Nancy Haugen Cook was born May 12, 1957 in Hobbs, New Mexico to Gil and Jean Haugen. She was the youngest of three daughters. Nancy was educated in the Hobbs School District and graduated from High School in 1976. Nancy attended the University of Arkansas for two years and graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a degree in education.
Nancy relocated to Oklahoma City after graduation and spent her entire professional career teaching. She taught at Page Woodson Elementary, Hoover Middle School and Northeast Middle and High School all in the Oklahoma City Public School District. Nancy was a devoted school teacher, always modeling honorable behavior and expecting it from her students.
Nancys faith has always been a foundation for her life. It was while attending Village Baptist Church that she met the love of her life, Grayson Cook. Nancy had purchased a home, and Grayson willingly helped Nancy fix up her home. Their relationship blossomed, and they were married in Village Baptist 20 years ago on June 7 1997. Nancy and Grayson shared many memories together. Their support of their nieces and nephews took up many evenings. They were avid Thunder fans, rarely missing a game. Their trips and cruises created memories for a lifetime. Their involvement in their church home led to lasting friendships and fun times together.
Nancy was born with a heart defect and was an early patient of the famed DeBakey and Cooley heart team in Houston, Texas. Nancy and her parents flew to Houston in 1962 for open heart surgery to help repair a hole in her heart. While Nancy had life-long complications due to this congenital condition, it rarely slowed her down or limited her zest for life. Even after a month in Mayo in May of this year, Nancy returned to OKC to Jim Thorpe Rehab, determined to return to her loving home to her husband and her beloved cats. Her spirit was willing, but her body was not.
Nancy adored many of her doctors who walked with her during her illness. Two who stood out were Dr. Mary Ann Bauman, who managed her care with the various specialists, and her beloved Dr. Doug Horstmanshof, lovingly called Dr. Doug. More often than not, Dr. Doug would spend up to an hour with Nancy during her appointments in his office, ministering more to her spirit and soul than her failing heart. Nancys many loyal friends have walked this journey with her throughout the years, and her family is eternally grateful.
Her family is confident that she is celebrating her liberation from her earthly body with her beloved mother and father; and her in-laws, Irving and Jo Cook, who loved her and accepted her like their own daughter. She and her sisters are blessed to have two parents who instilled values of love, compassion, forgiveness, patience, and loyalty. They instilled the love of the Lord into their hearts, and their belief in the value of education paved the way to all three living their dreams with college degrees. The home was one of unconditional love, high expectations, and lots of laughter and security.
We celebrate Nancys 60 years on this Earth with thanksgiving that she has always been surrounded by love and with confidence that we will see her again. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 20 years, Grayson Cook; her two sisters, Susan Turpen and Janie Pape; her four sister in laws, Melody Box, Joy Burge, Carol Cook and Gaylee Watson; and many nieces and nephews and devoted friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Integris Hospice House.
