Obituary

NABIL TOUFIC KHALEK Nabil T. Khalek, 69, died peacefully at home in his sleep on September 14, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Majdelbaana, Lebanon on January 14, 1951. His birth surname was Abdulkhalek (also spelled Abdul-Khalek). He shortened his last name to Khalek in Federal Court upon proudly being sworn in as a United States citizen. Nabil grew up in Sofar, a lovely town on Mount Lebanon. Since his family had properties on the mountain, in the Bekaa Valley, with a residence in Beirut, he had the advantage of both small town and big city life, and had a happy childhood. A family oriented person, Nabil was greatly influenced by his grandfather, Hussein Abdulkhalek, a respected Druze sheik. The Sheik taught his grandson the values of honesty, dependability, honor, compassion, justice and charitable actions. Nabil was raised to see people of all races, religions and nations as children of God. Nabil was a self-contained but tender fellow. A flash of anger was quickly forgotten and forgiven. Every day was a new day giving others a clean slate. He would walk for miles in the snow to come to the aid of a friend or neighbor. When Nabil was 24 years old, a violent civil war broke out in his native Lebanon. Many young men joined the various sectarian militias. Nabil did not. Instead, he risked his life going into Beirut and other towns to procure the prescription medication needed by the sick and elderly in the mountain towns. In doing so, he had to avoid snipers and the various militias. Other than those he helped, few people knew what he was doing. Nabil came to the United States in 1977 as a student at Oklahoma City University where he met another student, Sharon Gayle Fore. They married on August 27, 1978. He completed his degree in computer science in Glendale, California where he worked in industry as a CNC machinist, programmer and instructor. He enjoyed working with both his mind and his hands. When he returned to Oklahoma City he continued working in manufacturing until his retirement at age 65. For entertainment, Nabil liked working crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and playing backgammon. He enjoyed watching talent shows, tennis matches, and American football. He was a fan of Indy racing and Nascar. His favorite jacket had a number 3 on the back and the name of Dale Earnhardt (Sr.) on the front. Nabil could be opinionated, stubborn at times, but he was a man who loved passionately, loyally and unconditionally. He will be greatly missed by many who loved him or who were touched by his kindness and generosity. Nabil is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sharon Gayle Fore, his son, David Nabil Khalek (Lisa), two stepchildren, Adriana Davis and Joshua Isaac Davis (Jennifer). He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jeffrey D., Annabelle I., Adrian I., Layla M., and Cheyenne E. Khalek. He also has three step grandchildren: Jeremiah M., Emmett J., and Levi B. Davis. He is also survived by his two brilliant elder sisters: Amal Toufic Abdulkhalek and May Toufic Abdelkhalek Modad. He has several living nieces and nephews and numerous cousins and other extended family. He is also survived by an aunt and uncle, niece, grandnephew and cousins by marriage. Nabil was preceded in death by his parents, Toufic Hussein and Nabiha Abbas Abdulkhalek, as well as by his older brother, Issam Toufic Abdulkhalek. His father-in-law and mother-in-law, William D. and Mary L. Fore, as well as his brother-in-law, William D. "Bill" Fore, Jr., also preceded him in death. The family would like to thank all who helped and supported Nabil during his illness. Special thanks are given to the nurses and aides of Elara Caring of Shawnee, Oklahoma. Memorial donations are requested to be made to the Oklahoma Bar Association Lawyers for Heroes, which provides pro bono legal services for U.S. military veterans who cannot afford a lawyer. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, September 21, 2020 at the TBI Cemetery located at the south end of Memorial Park Cemetery at 13313 N. Kelley Avenue in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
