Morris (Moe) Sheppard Sample Jr., a proud veteran of the United States Navy, passed away September 29, 2021, at the age of 80.
The son of Morris and Milady Sample, Moe was born in Dime Box, Texas. As the oldest of seven children, he grew up in Columbus, Texas where his family owned a sewing machine shop in which Moe worked as a teenager. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1960.
Shortly after graduating, Moe enlisted in the United States Navy. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. As part of this service, Moe served in Hawaii, Japan, Greece, and as part of the Naval Intelligence Command in Arlington, Virginia. He retired from service in 1980 and returned to his home state of Texas. Moe enjoyed woodworking and constantly blessed his family and friends with handmade furniture and decor. He devoted much of his time in service to the American Legion including serving as President of American Legion Post 393 in Cleveland, Texas. During his time as President, Moe was honored to host The Moving Wall Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Moe was preceded in death by his father and mother; his wife, Judy Sample; and his sister, Ruth Plank.
Moe is survived by four brothers and a sister as well as his daughter, Sharon Kipf and her husband, Doug of Oklahoma City as well as their children and many great-grandchildren. His loved ones fondly remember his love for his country and his enduring example of perseverance and hard work.
Viewing will be Tuesday, 8am-5pm at Mercer-Adams. Graveside services will be Wednesday, October 6, 11:00am in Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK.
