Obituary

Mildred Pauline Smith was born April 6, 1913 in Reagan, Oklahoma, to William Edgar Smith and Maude Elizabeth Smith, the 6th of 9 children. Her only sister died at the age of 2, making Millie the only girl among 7 brothers for most of her life. She outlived them all. She met Nelson Jones Beckett in Yukon, Oklahoma, while visiting friends, and they married 3 months later in 1929. She was 16, and they said it wouldnt last. Their one child, Nelson Dale, was born 5 years later. Nelson worked in the family flooring business while Millie was a homemaker raising young Nelson. Around 1948, Nelson, Sr. began working with the police department and spent 26 years in police work, retiring as Chief of Police for Warr Acres. After Nelson Dale went to college, Millie began working at the Rockwell aircraft factory where she remained until her retirement in 1978. After retirement, Millie and Jonesy enjoyed traveling around the country and often met Dot and Nelson at various conventions. They always drove and were known for buying a new car every year. Millie prized her ability to drive and renewed her license in 2009. She had a keen sense of humor that remained until the end. The Becketts were life-long members of the churches of Christ with the Mayfair church being their home in Oklahoma. Nelson died in 2003, and Millie moved to Houston in 2009 to live with her son. Her daughter-in-law, Dot, died in 2010. Millie fell in October and cracked her pelvis. Complications and age led to her death on December 22. Funeral service will be Tuesday, December 27, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Memorials in Millies memory may be made to Lifeline Chaplaincy, 1415 Southmore Blvd., Houston, TX, 77004
