Obituary

Mildred Lillian (Mickey) Johnston, 83, was gathered into the loving arms of her heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, after a recent accident, surgery and a brief illness. She was a lifelong resident of Bethany and the descendant of early Oklahoma Indian Territory pioneers who were key contributors to Bethany's early growth. Mickey was the beloved mother of Lynn Taylor and husband Charlie of Oklahoma City; step-mother of Roy Johnston of Minneapolis, MN, and Martha Johnston of Minneapolis. Grandchildren include Gena Turpin and husband Rusty of Moore, and Sarah and Becka Johnston of Minneapolis. Mickey was the great-grandmother of Brittany Dawn Woodring of Yukon and Oklahoma City, a student at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK; and Levi Turpin of Moore. Born in 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Gracie May Hicks Black and R.J. Black, Mickey had a nearly fatal bout of pneumonia as a newborn, underwent surgery when just a few days old, suffered a massive brain tumor years later and survived longer than anyone else in her family. She was a deeply devoted Christian, repeatedly saying she had done her job on earth and was ready to join her daughter Grace Leigh Woodring who died following heart surgery in 1967, and her parents. Additional survivors include the children of her sister, Gena Taylor and husband Archa: Karen Taylor of Cisco, Texas; David Taylor of Joshua, Texas; and Joe Taylor of Kennedale, Texas; and the children of her sister Norma, Cathy Cosby and the late Craig Cosby of Abilene. Survivors also include great-nieces and great-nephews, Randy and David Jones of Dallas; Emily and Ben Taylor of Kennedale; and Amber, Tracie Lee and Beth Taylor of Whitesboro, Texas. She also is survived by many Hicks and Black cousins throughout Oklahoma and numerous friends and loved ones. Mickey's grandfather Willard Fillmore Hicks participated in the Cimarron Land Rush, also known as the Cherokee Run, where he obtained his land grant in Perry, Oklahoma. Her Hicks and Black grandfathers owned extensive acreage in what was to become Bethany and provided land to the Bethany Independent School District, the Nazarene Church and family members. Mickey's Grandma and Grandpa Black's home still stands in Bethany, as does her mother's home on Peniel Street. Preceding Mickey in death are aunts and uncles from the Hicks and Black families - Henry and Alta Hicks, Ina and John Goodall, Earl and Earlene Johnson, Mildred and Ruben Walton, Clara Smith, Vernal Black, Lovalee Black, Forrest Black and many others. Mickey married Guy Roy Woodring after graduating with him from Bethany High School. Guy Roy was the basketball captain, Mickey was the cheerleader and her niece Karen was a mascot. Mickey was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband Guy Roy Woodring, her late husband Thomas Johnston, her daughter Grace Leigh and numerous relatives in Bethany and Oklahoma City. She also was preceded in death by her beloved sisters, Gena Taylor and husband Archa of Whitesboro; and Norma Cosby and husband Jim of Abilene, Texas. Mickey was a beautiful, dynamic, loving woman who took care of all those around her. She graduated from Bethany High School and has maintained a friendship with many fellow alumni through the years. She was a longtime member of Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, an active member of her Sunday School class there, and she attended services every Sunday she could for many years, thanks to transportation provided by two precious adopted grandchildren, David and Bonnie and their two children. Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Friday (March 2) at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home in Bethany, with graveside services at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, led by Olivet Baptist Church minister, the Rev. Steve Kern. Mickey will be interred near her mother and daughter at Bethany Cemetery under the arrangements of Mercer-Adams Funeral Home in Bethany. A reception and lunch follow at an as-yet-undetermined location. Mickey was loved by all who knew her. We celebrate her life in Christ and our time with her.
