Mildred L. Gibbens, 102, died February 23, 2011. Born June 12, 1908, in Protem, Missouri, in the Ozarks, she was the daughter of Dr. James O. Nicholson, M.D., and Eavline Keesee Nicholson. The family came to Oklahoma for the fathers health but remained only four years, moving to Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Mrs. Gibbens remained in Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. Her brother, James L. Nicholson, also remained in Oklahoma, graduating from the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma University College of Medicine. Mrs. Gibbens married Raymond A. Donaldson who predeceased her. Later, she married Dr. William N. Gibbens, DDS, who also predeceased her. Mrs. Gibbens was a member of the Congregational Church for sixty years, serving as Chairman of the Steering Committee which organized and established the Mayflower Congregational Church in Oklahoma City. Mrs. Gibbens taught 38 years in the Oklahoma City schools and one year in the US Army Dependent School System in Germany. Survivors include her granddaughters, Ann Jordan and Lisa Williams, both of Texas, and extended family members of her late husband, Dr. William N. Gibbens. Viewing will be Sunday, noon to 9pm at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service. In order to spare those she loved and those who loved her, services will be held at the graveside at Memorial Park Cemetery, Monday, February 28 at 10:00am.
