Obituary

Genevieve Brewer Merle Genevieve Brewer peacefully passed to eternal life on September 12, 2020. Genevieve was born to John C. and Jimmie Leda (Martin) Self in Tahoka, Texas, on January 27, 1934. She and her siblings, Alice Ann, and Jimmy Carl were all born at home, on the family farm. As true for countless families, the Self family faced many hardships during the 1930s and 1940s as they dealt with the challenges of those difficult times. During her school years, Genevieve and her family moved from Tahoka, then lived in New Mexico, Oregon and in 1950 returned to West Texas. Genevieve graduated from high school in Lubbock, Texas. Much of Genevieves character was formed during her childhood as she dealt with lifes uncertainties. Though there was never a kinder, sweeter, person than Genevieve, she also had a backbone of steel; she was resilient. Following graduation, Genevieve began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.s Lubbock office. In time, Genevieves business skills and hard work were recognized as she earned promotions into office management. In 1953, on a blind date, Genevieve met the love of her life, John Brewer. After dating for two years, John and Genevieve were married on August 6, 1955 as they eloped to Clovis, New Mexico. Their 63 year honeymoon ended with Johns passing in 2018. On November 22, 1956, Genny and John celebrated the birth of their son, Johnny. Johns career with Johnson and Johnson soon brought their family to Oklahoma, making the community of Bethany their home. It was here that Genny and John lived the rest of their lives. John and Genny were beloved by their family; they were a very special aunt and uncle to all of their nephews and nieces. Genny and John loved, and were very proud of, both their son, Johnny, and their grandson, Mark. As well, Genny and John had many wonderful friends across the community. These included friendships that they made during the five years that they lived at Southern Plaza Retirement Community, as well as special long-time friends with whom they shared numerous gatherings and also with whom they extensively traveled across both the U.S. and the globe. Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband and their son, by her parents, and by both of her siblings. She is survived by her grandson, Mark A. Brewer; sisters-in-law, Delores Self, Marcia Massey and Bobbye Brewer; nieces, Sabrina (David) Enyeart, Julian Grey (Sean Oliver), Karla (Jerry) Haddock; by many other nieces and nephews; and also by great nieces and great nephews. Throughout her life Genevieve demonstrated trust in her Lord. Strengthened by her abiding faith, she never let the heartbreaks of life destroy her. Genevieves acts of love, thoughtfulness, kindness and caring were constantly expressed by her. While Genevieve was a loving person, she was also a truly beloved person. The last two years of Genevieves life were very difficult for her. Her family wishes to express its appreciation for the loving care that was provided by the management and staff at Brookdale in the Village, Bellevue Health and Rehabilitation of Oklahoma City, and LifeCare Hospice. A funeral service will not be held for Genevieve. At a future date, a celebration of Genevieves life will be scheduled. Services Later
