Dad graduated from Topeka HS then attended college for 3 years. Max joined the US Navy, where he achieved the rank of full commander. He was a decorated World War II hero. His accomplishments include becoming a navy pilot where he flew in a squadron called "The Black Cats." Their mission was to fly at night and bomb Japanese ships. Dad had many memorable experiences in the Navy including hanging out with John Wayne. Post war, dad was manager of the Fox Theater in Topeka, KS where he met and married Anna Mae DeFrees. Together they raised 6 children. Dad became a State Farm agent in 1959. He ran a very successful agency for 36 years and retired at the age of 75. Dad was very well respected and known as a loving and generous man. He would do anything for anyone that needed help. He believed in hard work. Some of his sayings were, "Whatever is fair and square and right, do that" and "Always hold up your end." He loved reading his favorite bible verses which were I Corinthians 13:1-13.
