Obituary

Mattie Lee Riggs Cory was born in Bethany, Oklahoma on April 26, 1921 and passed away at the age of 101 on January 21, 2023. Mattie was the youngest of the 9 Riggs children born to William Riley Riggs and Mittie Angeline (Douglas) Riggs. Her friends and family describe her as feisty, talented, social, and thoughtful. She was a beautiful lady with the gift of hospitality. Mattie was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother. She loved her family and friends with a passion. Mattie met Bob Cory, the love of her life, when they were teenagers. They fell in love and were married on October 24, 1938. They enjoyed "72" wonderful years of marriage. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; all her siblings; her husband, Robert (Bob) Cory; and two sons, Robert. D. Cory and Steven Gregory Cory. She is survived by her son, Phillip L. Cory and wife Joy; her daughter, Judith A. (Cory) Kastner and her husband Glen; and daughter-in-law, Fran Cory. She has 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Mattie is also survived by her special nephews and nieces; her "adopted" daughter, Aki Konishi; and a host of friends. Mattie loved her church and has been a very active and supportive member. She grew up in Bethany and was a member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene until she and Bob were married. They were longtime members of the Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene. Bob and Mattie were charter members and helped establish the Lakeview Park Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City. They transferred their membership back to the Bethany First Church of the Nazarene in 1988. Mattie traveled to most of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rico and Peru. Christmas and all holidays were her favorites because she loved to decorate and entertain her family and friends. She really loved anything sweet and crispy. Mattie was a great cook and famous for baking, especially cakes, desserts, and pies. Her recipe for Lace Cups with Sherbet and Berry Sauce was published in the 1990 Edition of Southern Living Annual Cookbook. She won several ribbons and awards for her cooking and baking. Sewing, quilting, and painting were her hobbies and she was a member of the Oklahoma Quilters Guild. She said technology is wonderful. She loved her iPhone and pictures on Facebook. Matties words of wisdom: "Learn something new every day to keep your mind active!"
