Mary Elizabeth Wensauer passed away on a beautiful Sunday morning, drawing her last breath while gazing into the adoring eyes of her loving daughter, Linda.
Words fail as we try somehow to express the depth of our gratitude, respect and most of all, love for the woman we have cherished all of our lives. Our loss is made bearable only by the memories that we treasure, our confidence that she has joined our father in heaven, and the assurance that someday soon, we will all be reunited. So we grieve, but we also celebrate a life well lived for the glory of God.
Born Mary Spires on December 17, 1924 in Memphis, Tennessee, she moved into her mansion in heaven on January 31, 2016. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Franklin Spires, mother, Grace Spires, brothers Clifton, Carl and Donald Gene Spires and her husband, Donald Frederick Wensauer. She is survived by her three children, Linda Holtzclaw, Brent Wensauer and Lisa Snow and their families including 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She graduated from Yukon High School and went on to a career with the First National Bank until her retirement, providing at once a better life for her children and teaching them the virtue of hard work. She also helped her son and husband build the business that enabled Don to retire early and Brent to keep his promise that they would always have the means to enjoy their senior years. For our father this meant funding and being actively engaged in ministry and missions. For mom it was the opportunity to travel with good friends and time to enjoy her ever-growing family.
But no summary or statistics begin to tell the story of the impact her life had on those of us who knew and loved her.
She was born into poverty and raised during the Great Depression, yet she enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. Many know the story of how our fathers ministry touched numerous lives. But it was our mothers love for Jesus, her steadfast faith and her prayers that brought dad to the Lord. Her Christ-like love and her prayers anchored our family and created a compelling legacy that extends to four generations (and counting) of Christ followers. The modest, yet winsome manner she exhibited in her roles as daughter, wife, mother and friend informed, challenged and inspired us in how we live and the choices we make.
In the last few years Alzheimers disease robbed us of more and more of the person we so loved, and eventually took her life. But to the very end her illness could not quiet the sweet sound of her laughter nor could it diminish warmth of her smile. While heaven celebrates her arrival and welcomes her home, we will honor her memory by our love for God and by serving one another.
Though many of her lifelong friends are gone, the family wishes to express our appreciation for the friendship and support of the saints at Harvest Assembly of God Church, especially her sister in law, Pat Spires. We are also grateful for the gentle and professional care of Becky Hardy with Carter Healthcare and especially for her daughter Lisa, who devoted herself to moms care and was her constant companion in the final years of her life.
We are at once heartened and humbled by the outpouring of prayer and support from so many. Our celebration of her life will be held on Monday, February 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Harvest Assembly of God Church, 4019 S Pennsylvania Ave., Oklahoma City, OK, followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
