Mary Louise Surprenant, Marylou to her friends, at the age of 93, went to her Heavenly home Friday Nov. 11 surrounded by family members at her residence in Edmond.
She was born in Kentland, IN, August 1, 1923 to Lucille and Joel D. Fortin as one of 8 children. Her surviving siblings are Rosealine Christoph, Joel D. Fortin, Jr. and Fae Holloway. She was preceded in death by Ronald Fortin, Irene Kenney, Rosemary Fruits and Mae Langellier. The family then moved to Illinois. Mary also lived in Arkansas and Texas before coming to Oklahoma.
During the war she worked in a military supply factory making artillery shells. Besides raising 6 children, she authored a book "Mr. Inchworms Lost Family". She was a long time member of the Altar and Rosary Society in Illinois and Arkansas. In Texas she trained to help bring others into the Catholic faith. At St. Anns Retirement Center she was a sacristan on a daily basis.
Lionel R Surprenant, her dearly beloved spouse of 48 years, preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1994.
She is survived by her son, Lionel A. Surprenant and wife, Jody of Momence, IL and 5 daughters: Marylou Bourrell and husband Jerry of Ellisville, MS, Madonna White of Dayton, OH, Charmaine Surprenant of Edmond, OK, Michelle Gilbert and husband Steve of Meridian, MS and Bernadette (Bernie) Morgan and husband Jon of Edmond, OK.
She had 17 grandchildren: Dawn R. Rayburn, Jerry Bourrell, Helaine Valldejuli, Alice Valldejuli, Sarah White, Erin White, Jacqueline Frishman, Rebecca Holt, Elizabeth Heim, Jeremy Surprenant, Daniel Surprenant, Adam Gilbert, Jessica Giles, Blake Morgan, Kristine Kilkenny, Jon Morgan Jr. and Roseanne Smith.
She had 21 great-grandchildren: Zackary Rayburn, Thomas James Rayburn, Benjamin Rayburn, Autumn Bourrell, Maygan Reynolds, LeeAnna Bailey, Therlo Bailey, Renee Bailey, ShiMai Bailey, Sara LaShaye Avery, Eli Frishman, Emaline Holt, John (Jack) Holt, Andrew Heim, Joan Heim, Margaret Heim, Sadie Gilbert, Tyler Tucker, Riley Kilkenny, Brandon Wartman, and Jenny Grundell.
She also had 6 great-great-grandchildren: Blaze J Grundell, Miranda Wartman, Dominic Wartman, Gabriel Wartman, Zachary Wartman and Lili Wartman.
Over the years Mary opened her arms and heart to others, adopting them as part of the family. They are: the Pabon family, the Nowak family, Jacqueline Lower, Alan and Rosemary Mathis, Wendy (Willie) Galfand and Wanda Keeling
She was a friend to all; a loving mother and grandmother to her family, and her legacy will not be forgotten.
