Mary Alice (Poland) Mills was born May 18, 1922 in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Martin Van Buren Poland and Effie Mae Link Poland. She attended school in Seiling, OK and graduated high school on May 19, 1941. School was very important to Mary. She stayed with different families throughout her school years and endured many trials and weather conditions to get to school. In 1943, Mary worked at the North American Aviation Plant in Kansas City, Kansas along with her two sisters, Pearlia and Edna. All three were Rosie the Riveters.
She met the love of her life, James W. Mills at a country dance in Chester, OK. They were married on July 4, 1945 in Borger, Texas. Mary and James lived in Borger where James was an iron worker, and she a homemaker. Their daughter, Shannon Faye was born January 15, 1947 and Sharon Kay was born September 18, 1948.
Mary was an avid gardener growing both flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed canning her goods. She kept an immaculate yard and hated weeds, especially dandelions. She and James loved traveling extensively, often being included by her sister Edna and her husband Bill. A favorite spot for Mary was Branson, Missouri where she and her friends enjoyed country music and favorite artists Mickey Gilley and Mel Tillis. Mary attended the senior citizens dances in Midwest City where she enjoyed the country music bands and dancing. They always played her favorite song, "Maidens Prayer." Mary was also a mall walker and made many friends in her social endeavor. Mary lived a full, meaningful life. She had abundant love for family and friends and was loved by all. She was often called an angel by her many friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James, on June 2, 2005 after 59+ years of marriage. She was also preceded by her parents and siblings, Pearlia, Jay, Wilbur, Little Elsie, Edna and Louis.
Survivors include her daughters, Shannon Garrison and husband Troy, and Sharon Power; grandchildren, Kathryn, Vance, Regina and Vanessa; great-grandchildren, Alfredo, Anthony, Max Lee and Jake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
