Obituary

Mary Evelyn Burga was born on June 5, 1943, and passed away on August 24, 2023. She was 80 years young. She was born in Bell Gardens, CA to Allie Boaz Kerr and Leola (Roller) Kerr. Her family was never anchored to one place for too long, and she moved with them to various places before settling in the Oklahoma City area, which she called home for the next 6 decades. Mary married Pitagoras ("Pete") Burga on July 27, 1963, and it was they who raised their 3 children. Mary had many different jobs in her long life, starting work in a long gone but locally remembered restaurant in the Windsor Hills area called "The Ranchers Daughter." She had also worked at the Hertz Data Center, Hospice of Central Oklahoma, and her last job was working at Integris Physician Services, where she specialized in medical claims billing and collection. At the age of 62, when a lot of us are thinking about retirement, she was dealing with the intricacies of Medicare claims, and was very successful at it for many years, before retiring from work in her mid 70s. As a side job, she also had a business, Precision Tax Services, and did income tax filing for many years from her home. At times, Mary enjoyed different kinds of music, and went through different phases involving Elvis, Alfred Apaka (a Hawaiian entertainer), and most recently, Josh Groban, whom she would enthusiastically share her admiration for with family and friends. She also liked a variety of different movies and shows and she liked really good melodramas, a lot of them Westerns, such as the miniseries "Centennial" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." Her sense of humor was hard to classify. What others found funny, she most times would not, but some things she would see and hear could trigger her funny bone and she would laugh with what could be described as an "audacious cackle." To wake up her children for school, she would sometimes sing in an off-key voice a song called "Lazy Livers," which she found funny but to sleeping kids would have the intended effect of waking them up. Mary also had a strong faith in Jehovah God and found great comfort in scriptures such as Revelation 21:3-4. Until she was too sick to be able to listen in, in her last few years, she would regularly connect to and follow along with the Sunday meeting through her daughter Amandas congregation on Zoom, and it was something that she regularly looked forward to. When she could, she would share her hope in the Resurrection with hospital staff. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Shirley Jean Kerr, Don Kerr, John Kerr, Sylvia Nowlin Kerr and Loren Kerr. She leaves behind a legacy that she was incredibly proud of and grateful for - her children and grandchildren, Curtis Burga and his wife Sindee, and their sons Sean and Jake; Craig Burga; and Amanda Burga McCloy and her husband Aaron, and their children, Ariana, Adrian and Ashton. She is also survived by her sisters, Nita Kerr Fletcher, Patricia Kerr Hatfield and Christine Kerr Martin. Marys passing will be felt by her family members for a very long time. We all look forward to a day when we will see her again, young and in restored health. A memorial service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7 at Mercer-Adams Chapel. The service will be webcast and may be viewed on this obituary page. To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Mary Evelyn Burga, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.
