Martha H. Ferguson
(February 2, 1933 June 26, 2022)
Martha Helen Ferguson was born on Groundhog Day 1933 in Glencoe, OK to the late Leo Chester and Stacy May (Horton) Ritchey and went to be with the Lord on June 26, 2022. Martha was the middle sister between older sister Mary and younger sister Leota. The sisters remained close throughout their lives. She graduated from Northeast High School in 1951.
Martha was unable to have children so she became a foster parent to several children in the mid-1950s before adopting Kathrene in 1957, Keith in 1959, and Linda in 1968. In 1978, she married Robert Ferguson and gained five more adult "bonus" children whom she loved as her own. Martha loved to travel and go camping with Bob. They would get off work on Friday, load up the car and head to a lake for the weekend. They were married for 34 years until Bobs death in 2013.
On July 4, 2013, at the age of 80 years old, Martha experienced a "first" in her life when she got to fly in an open helicopter. Prior to that day, she had never flown in any type of aircraft. She had so much fun, she did it again the next year!
Martha worked at different clerical jobs in her lifetime, but was mostly a housewife and mother while her children were young. Once all were in school, she went back to work and ended up working for the State of Oklahoma from 1981 until she retired in 1998.
Marthas pastime and passion was crocheting. Everyone who knew her probably had one of her afghans, a stocking cap, a doily, or maybe a potholder or cross. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Martha learned about a volunteer group that crocheted for patients receiving cancer treatment. Nothing gave her more joy than to crochet for others. She volunteered from 2009-2019 and served 5,455 hours as an INTEGRIS Cancer Institute Volunteer with the "Stitching for Sanity" volunteer workgroup. At the 4,000-hour increment, she was presented with the Presidents award for her service.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ferguson; sisters, Mary Broomfield and Leota Bishop; sons, Keith Cowger and Jay Ferguson; daughter, Nadine Ferguson Womack; and grandson, Anthony Amrine. She is survived by daughters, Kathrene and Billy Evans, Linda and Pat Warner; son, Michael and Laura Ferguson; and daughter-in-law, Laverne Cowger; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to the Stitching for Sanity group in Marthas honor: INTEGRIS c/o Wellness Center, 5911 W Memorial Rd, Oklahoma City OK 73162.
