Obituary

Martha Marguerite (Heferle) Brunsman, 88, of Oklahoma City, OK died peacefully on November 23, 2009 due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Martha was born June 18, 1921 in Toledo, OH. She truly lived the American Dream! Martha lived through milk and ice wagons, streetcars, Model T's, the Great Depression, coal fired furnaces, trains, jet airplanes, moon landings, computers, cell phones, and much more. Martha was the seventh and youngest child to John and Mary (Stalzer) Heferle. Her parents immigrated from different Austrian villages, arrived at Ellis Island in 1898, and married in Toledo in 1901. Martha and her siblings were so proud of being first generation Americans! Martha's parents died when she was young. Her older siblings Lilly, Tony and Joe worked together to keep the family intact. She never forgot the sacrifices they made to raise the youngest children Richie, Mamie and Martha. Family was always front and center to Martha throughout her life. Martha graduated third in her class of 525 from Waite High School in 1939. She desired to attend college but needed to support herself and promptly entered the workforce. She found her dream job as an Executive Secretary for the founder and president of The Grace E. Smith Company, a renowned cafeteria serving thousands of customers daily. Martha worked at Smith's for 9 years and loved every minute of it. Her bosses proclaimed Martha The World's Greatest Secretary! Nearing the end of WW II while home on leave, Joe Brunsman would visit his mother who also worked at Smith's. Martha was smitten with this handsome young man in uniform and they married on May 18, 1951. Joe's career in the oil and gas business took them to Wyoming, New Mexico, and finally to Oklahoma. Along the way, Joe and Martha became proud parents to four boys and a girl. Martha's life revolved around her family, church, and neighborhood. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, volunteer school librarian, home room mother and family chauffeur. She helped all 5 children through 13 years on their paper routes. Martha loved flowers and gardening and spent many happy hours planting, watering and weeding in the Oklahoma heat. Martha's efforts were recognized by OKC Beautiful as Yard-of-the-Month. A cat or two could always be seen sitting on the front porch with Martha admiring her neighborhood of over 50 years. Martha was so proud of her family and especially pleased that all five of her children graduated from The University of Oklahoma. Martha is survived by her five children: Kenneth James, Lawrence John (Jackie), Michael David, Mary Ann Peterson (Marc), and Gregory Thomas; five granddaughters, Kristen, Lindsey, Meredith, Megan and Whitney; six grandsons: Michael, Jonathan, Daniel, Eric, Joseph and Shaun; sisters-in-law Mary Heferle and Florence Heferle, both of Toledo, OH and Regina Fleck, Temperance, MI and numerous nieces and nephews. Martha is also survived by her dearest friend of 86 years, Mrs. Betty Jean Tenny of Hawthorne, NJ. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Joseph, parents, and siblings Lillian, Anthony, Joseph, Charles, Richard, and Marianne. Viewing will be Sunday, Nov. 29 at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home from 12 9 pm. The family will receive visitors at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 5024 N. Grove, OKC from 5 - 6:45 pm on Monday, Nov. 30 with a Prayer Service following at 7 pm in the church sanctuary. Rev.
