Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marlys Boynton Powlishta, who departed this world peacefully in her sleep on September 17, 2026, after bravely battling Multiple Myeloma. Born on June 20, 1947, in Oelwein, Iowa, Marlys lived a life full of love, creativity, and grace.

Marlys was the cherished daughter of Edwin and Beulah Boynton. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1965. Shortly thereafter, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Powlishta, on October 7, 1967, in Cedar Rapids. They moved to Illinois where together they built a beautiful family and shared many wonderful years until Kenneth's passing.

Marlys's professional journey began at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. As her children were growing up, she dedicated herself to nurturing them and others, running a home daycare. Her nurturing spirit also extended to her work at Plano High School, where she contributed in the copy room and cafeteria, among various other roles. Marlys was a beacon of kindness and efficiency, making lasting impressions wherever she worked.

Marlys gave her life to Christ while visiting her sister in California. She loved the Lord and was a devout member of her church. Marlys was known for her devotion and active participation. Her creativity was unparalleled—she had a passion for creating greeting cards, a ministry of love she shared for over 30 years. Her cards, given freely, touched the lives of many and were a testament to her generous spirit. She also found joy in crocheting, knitting, and exploring numerous other hobbies. Marlys's artistic talents were matched only by her ability to brighten the lives of those around her.

Marlys was a woman of remarkable warmth and kindness, always thinking of others and using her creativity to uplift them. Her legacy of love continues through her surviving family: her son, Jeffery Powlishta and his wife SiSi Su; her daughter, Marlynda Powlishta; her treasured grandchildren, Alexsis, Isabella, and Kenneth Powlishta; her sister, Florenda Burns; her brother, Ray Boynton and his wife Julie; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her beloved parents, Edwin and Beulah Boynton, and husband, Kenneth, who undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms.

A celebration of Marlys's life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service Chapel, located at 3925 N. Asbury Ave, Bethany, OK 73008. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Little Rock Township Cemetery in Plano, IL.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers of Trinity Hospice and Southern Plaza Memory Care, whose dedicated care and love during Marlys's illness provided comfort to her and her loved ones.

Marlys Boynton Powlishta will be profoundly missed and fondly remembered by all who were privileged to know her. Her legacy of love, faith, and creativity will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
