Marjorie Rose
Downing
Jun 16, 1933 — Oct 2, 2023
Marjorie Rose Downing, 90, of Oklahoma City, OK, passed away on October 2, 2023, peacefully in her sleep.
Marjorie was born on June 16, 1933, to Eugene Bezzant Peterson and Rose Coppin in Denver, CO. After graduating from Ponca City High School in 1951, she went on to study law at the University of Oklahoma, where she met and married Lewis Groves Mosburg in 1954. Despite the attitudes of that time, she decided to continue her education to pursue a law degree where she was the only woman in her graduating class.
After graduation, she started a family and did clerical work at her husband's law firm. She and Lewis had 3 children, Lewis (Gene), John, and Jeffrey.
Following her divorce from Lewis in 1968, a then-Republican Marjorie served as Legislative Assistant to Democratic Fred Harris where her work towards the advancement of equal rights for women and other marginalized groups took hold and would continue throughout the remainder of her life.
In 1972, Marjorie became the first full-time female member at Oklahoma City University Law School and served as Interim Dean during her tenure. She retired from OCU in 1998. She continued to carry the torch to lead the way for more women to hold professional positions. A colleague once quoted her adamantly responding to members of the Appointments Committee, "that there would only be enough women on the faculty when we could sit boy, girl, boy, girl, boy, girl at faculty meetings."
Marjorie married Carl Downing in 1973 and had the pleasure of adding her step-children, Carla and Trae, to her family.
While at OCU, she met Karen Howick, whom she married on March 16, 2016.
Marjorie's adventurous and inquisitive nature took her on many travels to beautiful and exotic locations before temporarily moving to Naples, Florida.
Following Karen's passing in March 2020, Marjorie moved back to Oklahoma, where she ultimately wanted to be closer to her family. She spent her last years playing bridge, petting dogs, reading books, and most importantly spending time with her loved ones, who miss her greatly.
Marjorie was predeceased by John Groves Mosburg, 2020. She is survived by Lewis Eugene (Gene) Mosburg (OKC) with wife, Hortensia, and children, Esteban, Victoria, and Juan Carlos; Jeffrey Evans Mosburg (Jenks) with wife, Kathleen, and daughter, Morgan; and John's widow, Emmanuelle (OKC), and children Dexter and Leon.
The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to Mercer-Adams Funeral Home. There will be a Celebration of Life on November 25, 2023, at 2:00 at Oklahoma City University - Bishop W Angie Smith Chapel, followed by inurnment at Fairlawn Cemetery.
