My mother, Marie Coody, was a very special lady. Mother was born on January 9, 1925 on the family farm in Cotton County, Oklahoma, near Temple, to her parents, Elmer and Lois (Lovelace) Gandy. She married Darwyn Coody, on May 29, 1947. They were married 72 rewarding years, till Daddys death, August 8, 2019. They had two daughters, Lyn and Marcia. They had one son, Ronnie, who died very young. Mother attended school in Clay City, Illinois, but graduated from Bethany High School in 1943. Her nickname in high school (given to her by a teacher) was Gabby Gandy, for obvious reasons. After high school and during WWII, she worked at Douglas Aircraft Co. pushing a cart around with airplane parts. She then attended Bethany Peniel College (Southern Nazarene University) until her marriage in 1947 when she began working at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. until Lyn was born in 1950. Mother loved being a wife and mother. For many years, she threw herself into childrens activities by teaching 2nd grade Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and being a camp counselor. Mother enjoyed sewing and became an amazing seamstress.
Mother and Daddy came to know the Lord Jesus Christ in the Delong Revival that swept through Bethany in the early 1950s. This experience with the Lord changed the course of both of their lives forever. Every morning, Mother could be found reading scripture and journaling her prayers. She spent decades studying and teaching Gods word. She encouraged and mentored many women in their walk with the Lord. She loved to pray and in the later years, loved being a part of an intercessory prayer group called Prayer First, which she was faithful to as long as she was able. Ill forever cherish the long conversations and times of prayer with my mom.
Mother was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darwyn; and two of her children, Lyn and Ronnie; sister-in-law, Debbi Gandy, and many other loved ones. She is survived by daughter, Marcia Leys; brothers, Bill (Mariglyn) and Everett Gandy; brother-in-law, Don Coody (Clara Lou); cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mothers life was well lived. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Well done, Mother!
