SNYDER, MARGARET LOREEN
Margaret Loreen Snyder was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada on August 8, 1924 to Lila G. (Cheyne) and Noble R. Silverthorn, a sister for brothers, Byron Reid and John Herbert Silverthorn, and two years later sister, Kathleen.
Loreen attended grade school and high school in Toronto and during World War II was a secretary at Research Enterprises Limited, first in the Mechanical Goods Division and then for the Admiralty Overseer of the British Admiralty Technical Mission. They manufactured binoculars, telescopes and range finders. During this time, she was a member of the Research Revelers who toured Army Bases and did a two-hour variety show for the troops in training. She sang, danced, and did a little comedy.
Later she worked for the National Drug and Chemical company and then for All Canada Radio Facilities who marketed transcriptions for local radio stations and programs such as The Green Hornet and The Shadow. In 1950, she met a girl friend who decided it would be fun to go to the United States and "see how the other half lived." The friend went to New York but Loreen went as far as Buffalo and was hired by the United States Rubber Company, first in the Steno Pool and later as secretary of the Manager and Assistant Manager of the Mechanical Goods Division.
A girl friend at US Rubber introduced Loreen to John C. Snyder whom she dated for three years and then married in 1953. They bought a home in the Boston Hills, south of Hamburg, NY, where they lived for 50 years. In 1956 a son, Charles E. Snyder was born.
Loreen was a member of Faith United Church of Christ, Boston, New York where she sang in the choir and as a soloist for some 50 years. She was a member of Sweet Adelines Inc., Hamburg Chapter for 14 years both in the chorus and quartets. They competed locally and regionally.
She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron of Cazenovia Chapter #287 in 1970 and 1974 with her husband as her Patron. In 1972, she was appointed District Deputy Grand Matron for the 2nd District of Erie, Order of Eastern Star, State of New York.
Loreen and John were both members of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program for more than 15 years and were members of the Boston Kazoo Band that entertained in Buffalo and surrounding nursing homes under the auspices of RSVP.
She served as secretary for the New York State Experimental Pre-Kindergarten program in the Hamburg Central School District for 14 years.
When Johns health began to fail, they moved to Oklahoma City to be near their son and took up residence at the Baptist Village of Oklahoma in 2003. John passed away in 2007.
Loreen is survived by her son, Charles E. Snyder; daughter-in-law, Kathy; three very loved grandchildren, Joseph C., Shauna L., and Cole E. Snyder. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Byron R. Silverthorn, and John H. Silverthorn; and her sister, Kay Ellis-Farlie.
