Marcus Martinus Harman passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, June 7, 2015. He was born March 15, 1945 in Wokam Aru-isle Maluku, Indonesia. He was the 3rd of 10 children born to parents Samuel and Marianna Harman. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 older sisters, and infant son, Jacob. He was also preceded by his wife's parents, Anne Louise and Wm. Johnson, and sister-in-law, Catherine Dickey. Marcus saying, "It takes a village to raise a child," was an accurate description of his early years of island life. As a youth he spent time on the Harman planation off the coast of the Molucca Sea. He traveled by boat for his primary education, which grew into a lifelong passion for learning, especially math and science. He later moved to Jakarta to pursue a pharmacy degree; however, due to political unrest this was halted. This was a difficult and challenging time in his life. Through his work as an interpreter for Mormon missionaries, he was given the opportunity to come to the United States to further his education in 1971. He attended Andrews University and Central Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health. Later he completed his Master's degree in Epidemiology from University of Oklahoma in 1981. He was a substitute teacher in primary and secondary education in Putnam City School District and Oklahoma City. He tutored countless students in math. His interests included politics, history, reading, nutrition and physical fitness. July 3, 1986 was a proud and momentous day for Marcus when he received his Certificate of Naturalization. He was sworn in as a US citizen as part of a televised ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Another special day for him was September 3, 1976. This was when he married his loving wife, Joanne Johnson, who survives him after 38 years. He is also survived by his sons, Marcus, Jeremiah and Samuel; grandchildren, Jeremiah, Lily and Ily; siblings, Christina Clasina Harman, Agustina Harman, Freddy Harman, John Harman, Nora Dora Pattinama, Frederick Harman and Yacoba Harman; in-laws, Ed and Linda Senn, John and Carol Brickner, Doug and Mary Lou Himebaugh, and James Dickey Sr; host of nieces and nephews. Marcus was a deeply spiritual person. He was an active member of Oklahoma City Central Seventh-Day Adventist Fellowship. He was a simple man of strong faith, intelligence, and hard working. His legacy is those core values and he will be missed dearly by all. The family will receive friends from 12-2pm on Saturday, June 13, at Mercer-Adams Chapel, followed by the 2:00pm memorial service.
