On January 28, 2022, Lowell Green passed into his Heavenly reward. He was born April 8, 1924 in a farmhouse in Chauncey, Illinois to Ausby Lowe Green and Eva Florence (Shank) Green. He grew up on the farm during the Great Depression, enduring the hardships that molded him into the hard-working, honest, and dependable man he became as part of the Greatest Generation.
When he graduated from high school, World War II was raging, and he enlisted in the Navy. He was involved in heavy fighting in Guadalcanal, the Marianas Islands, and the Philippines. He was wounded on a volunteer mission in the Philippines attempting to locate where the Japanese forces were dug in. He lost his right hand and the lower part of his right arm.
After discharge, knowing he couldnt make a living as a "one-armed carpenter," he enrolled in college and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He became a successful and highly respected engineer, working in the very early stages of the computer business among others.
He met his wife, Deloris (Linder), at his first job out of college, and they were married 67 years until her death in 2017. They had three children and traveled the country every summer, so that the children were able to see most of the U.S. Lowell and Deloris were loving soulmates throughout their long union, as well as wonderful parents.
When employed by General Electric, Lowell moved to Oklahoma City in 1967 and lived here the remainder of his life. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping and was very active in the Boy Scouts, including acting as Scoutmaster for his sons troop. He retired in the early 80s and was able to spend a lot of time with his grandchildren, with whom he had a special bond. He enjoyed a full and active life in retirement and was a competitive runner until the age of 89. He and wife Deloris competed in the National Senior Games in Palo Alto, CA in 2009, where both won 2 silver medals. They also ran many half-marathon races as part of the OKC Memorial Marathon.
