Lori Ann Yost Nelson, born January 5, 1963, died September 8, 2023, at the age of 60 in Bethany, Oklahoma, from the ravages of young-onset Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded by family and friends. Lori was a devoted mom to Ben and Grace and a wife to Jason. As a family, they made many memories while traveling and visiting many state and national parks across the country. She was known for her kindness and generosity.
As a child, Lori enjoyed dancing to many different styles, including ballet. For many years, Lori was a member in good standing of the Barry Manilow Fan Club. She hosted the best sleepovers and was an excellent student. She was a life-long, committed Christian, having accepted Jesus at a young age and let her light shine brightly every single day she lived.
Lori graduated from Edmond Memorial High School in 1981. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the American Society of Distinguished High School Students. When Lori was 18, she received the LBJ Congressional Intern Scholarship and served as a summer staff intern for Oklahoma Congressman Mickey Edwards in Washington, D.C. Lori attended the University of Oklahoma on an academic scholarship, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 1985. Lori was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and has hundreds of life-long friends who call her "sister." An extraordinary group of sorority sisters and other angel friends visited Lori and helped care for her regularly during her long and difficult illness. Lori's family is eternally grateful for these sisters and friends' deep affection and kindness toward Lori.
After graduating college, Lori moved to Washington, D.C., where she served as Deputy Press Secretary to U.S. Sen. Don Nickles from 1985-1989.
Lori earned a Master's in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma Gaylord School of Journalism in 2003. Lori was a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and in 2009, she earned her Accreditation in Public Relations (APR). The Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential certified her drive, professionalism, and principles, setting her apart from her peers and positioning her as a leader and mentor in the competitive public relations field.
Lori was a voracious reader and received her first library card as a child. As a mom, she loved reading bedtime stories to her children and later served on the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Library Commission. Professionally, Lori worked as the Public Information Officer for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation from 1989-1999. She then became the Director of Public Relations at the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department from 2000-2002. After taking a few years off to have their children, Lori became the Director of Public Relations for Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City from 2005-2012. She also taught public relations writing as an adjunct professor at the OU Gaylord College of Journalism from 2004-2007 and at Mid-America Christian University.
Lori was a proud Oklahoman living in Bethany, Edmond, and Oklahoma City. She moved to Northern Virginia right out of college to work in Washington and later returned home to build her family and career.
Lori married Norman Jason Nelson in Oklahoma City on August 15, 1998, and remained happily married until her death. Together, they raised two children whom she cherished, Benjamin Jacob David, 20, and Grace Ann, 17. She is survived by Jason, Benjamin, and Grace and was the only child of her parents, David T. and Anna M. Yost of Oklahoma City. Lori centered everything she did around her loving family.
