Linda Lou
Coffman
Jan 1, 1933 — Jan 26, 2025
Linda Coffman added her beautiful voice to the heavenly choir when she passed peacefully from this earth on January 26, 2025.
Linda Lou Hargis was born to Mattie Lou (Starnes) and Elmer Tillman Hargis in Grandfield, OK on January 1, 1933 - a New Year's baby. Four years later, her parents gave her a baby brother who she adored – Elmer Tillman Hargis II, affectionately known as "Tony."
Born in the middle of the Great Depression, her parents moved frequently pursuing work opportunities. Some of her favorite childhood memories were living near family in Grandfield as well as Electra, TX and Wichita Falls, TX and playing outside with her little brother and nearby cousins. She also spent a memorable year in San Francisco while both of her parents worked in the shipyards once the U.S. had joined WWII.
When Linda was a teenager, her parents moved to and settled in Oklahoma City where Linda attended Classen High School. There she made wonderful friendships with fellow "Comet" girls who remained lifelong best friends. Linda graduated high school in 1951 and decided to pursue a career in nursing.
Linda studied to be a Registered Nurse at the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing and graduated in 1954. While in nursing school, Linda made another great group of friends who she kept in touch with and held reunions with for many, many years.
In December of 1956, Linda attended a dance at the "Y" where she met a tall, handsome gentleman named Jimmie Scott Coffman, known as Scott. They began dating and wasted no time, marrying on March 2, 1957 at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church.
Linda and Scotty honeymooned in beautiful Hot Springs, AR and enjoyed a day or so before Linda came down with appendicitis and insisted they drive back to Oklahoma City so she could have her surgery with the doctors she knew!
The newlyweds moved to Albuquerque where Scott had a good job working for New York Life Insurance. About a year later, on February 1, they welcomed a beautiful blonde haired baby girl and named her Sunny Ray. Shortly thereafter, the little family moved back to Oklahoma City and the next year, had their first son, a darling baby boy named Jim Scott II, after his dad. In 1962, they had another sweet baby boy and named him William Christopher, "Chris."
During these early days as a family of five, Linda enjoyed staying home and raising her small kids while Scott worked and also attended the OCU School of Law. The family were dedicated members of Highland Hills Christian Church where Linda sang in the choir. The Coffman family became dear friends with many other families from the church and in the following years, they vacationed together in the beautiful tiny mountain town of Lake City, Colorado and formed a bridge club which met every month to play, socialize and eat delicious, homemade desserts together.
On February 22, 1968, Linda and Scotty welcomed their last addition to the family, a chunky little redhead named Gaye Lynn.
Now a family of six, they began attending Grace United Methodist Church where they remained for many years. Linda was an esteemed member of the Grace choir and soloed frequently with her beautiful Alto voice. When Gaye Lynn was about 5, she started joining her mama singing duets at church which they were blessed to do every chance they could from then on, at church and elsewhere. Linda and Scott were faithful members of their beloved Pathfinders Sunday School class where they had many friends. Linda also worked with the United Methodist Women at Grace, acting as President for a period of time. She was also a member of the CARE team along with many other roles.
As the children grew up, Linda supported their many endeavors, attending lots of dance recitals for Sunny, baseball games and Boy Scouts for the boys and, eventually, plays and shows for Gaye as well countless other music lessons, hobbies, school events and other activities.
Through the years, Linda and Scotty were able to travel to many wonderful places, often as part of business trips for Scott. As a family, they visited Florida and Walt Disney World, the Grand Canyon, California and Disneyland, Hilton Head Island and of course, their favorite place, Lake City, CO. As a couple, they made a memorable journey by rail to New York City one year.
Linda and Scott both loved to dance and would often "jitterbug" around the house when they heard a favorite song. Linda was an avid bridge player and played frequently with a group of lady friends for many years – some of them from the old Highland Hills crowd – and some as new additions. Linda and Sunny also enjoyed participating together in a local Christian Women's Club through the late 80s and 90s.
When Scotty passed in May of 1999, Linda stayed busy with church, choir, bridge, time with friends and family, travel and volunteering. With her nursing experience, she was a valued volunteer at Deaconess Hospital and she also adored working with the children as a volunteer with WhizKids – watching them learn and grow more confident.
Everyone who knew Linda loved her and she collected friends wherever she went. She will be remembered for her strong faith, her beautiful smile, her kindness, her lovely voice and her sense of humor. Linda always felt that her family was her greatest accomplishment. Even through her illness over the last many years, she never forgot her children and she was always happiest when her family was close by even to the very end.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Tony, and her devoted husband of 42 years, Scotty. She is survived by her children, Sunny and husband John Richardson; Jim and wife, Teresa; Chris and wife, Marcia; and Gaye and husband, Ian Williamson. At the time of her death, Linda had 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grands: Harrison (son - Hudson); Stratton (wife, Amanda; daughters - Chloe, Paisley, Isla); Andrew (wife, Erica); Nichole (husband, Austin; daughter - Eleanor; son - Oliver), Trey (wife, Carolina; sons – Sebastian, Emmett), Lauren (husband, Doug; son – Landry) Adam (wife, Sammi; son – Weston); Leslie, Rebecca and Carter. Linda also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, friends and other family members. She left all of us better people and we were blessed to know her.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Transitions Hospice team for all of their compassion and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Linda's memory to her church, Lakeside United Methodist Church, 2925 NW 66th, Oklahoma City, OK 73116 or the Alzheimer's Association.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 7, 1:00pm at Lakeside United Methodist Church. Viewing will begin just prior to the service at 12:15pm. Interment will take place in Resurrection Memorial Cemetery.
