Obituary

Lewis Alexander "Chick" Mason, 83, of Yukon, OK, passed away on November 6, 2012, joining that great white robed choir from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne of God, singing, "Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!" He was born November 20, 1928, in Ardmore, OK, to parents, Jesse and Julia Mason. At the ripe age of 15, he temporarily dropped his last name and concocted a new life history to enlist in the U.S. Navy. On April 11, 1944, he was assigned to Ships Company LCI (G) 407. He participated in the invasions of Dulag on Leyte, Los Negros, Pegun, Brass and Fernaldo Islands, Nassugba and Okinawa. He was injured in the invasion of Leyte, again when a suicide plane hit the 407 in Okinawa, and a final time on a mission along the China coast. These injuries resulted in a lifetime of back and leg pain. He was discharged April 19, 1946. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars, World War II Victory Medal and the Republic of China Medal of Appreciation. He was honored to have served his country in this way. He graduated from Bethany Peniel Nazarene College in 1952, with a degree in Church Music. He married Helen Jo Peters on June 11, 1950; their union was blessed by three children. They divorced in January, 1961. He married Billie Yvonne Smith on August 21, 1961; their union was blessed by one daughter. He was a certified EMT, a Red Cross instructor, a scuba instructor, a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America, and a Minister of Music in the Church of the Nazarene, serving in Corpus Christi, TX, Madill, OK, Edmond, OK, Ardmore, OK, and Lake Havasu City, AZ. He was an enthusiastic participant in Scouting, earning every rank and recognition the Boy Scouts of America offer to both their Boys and their Professional Scouters. He believed in developing young leaders, actively mentoring Scouts in pursuit of their Eagle rank. He loved to swim, making it his regular exercise activity, teaching his children and grandchildren, and competing in Scuba derbies with his wife, Yvonne. Most of all, his calling and passion was music. The Lord used the gift of his voice and sensitivity of his spirit to touch countless lives, until many cannot think of him without remembering him singing or without repeating the words of a specific song he sang. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Billie Yvonne, of Yukon, OK; his four children: Linda Acre, and her husband, Darrell, of Yukon, OK; Barry Mason, and his wife, Gayla, of Ardmore, OK; Ronda Hadley of Bethany, OK; and Terri Mason, of Yukon, OK; six grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse, mother, Julia, and all six of his siblings. Visitation will be at Mercer Adams Funeral Service, 3925 N.
