Obituary

Leo C. Mayfield was born May 7, 1913, in Wayne, Oklahoma to Joseph and Maggie Mayfield. He died in Oklahoma City on December 25, 2009 at the age of 96. He grew up and graduated from high school in Byars, Oklahoma where he took part in sports, academic, and drama activities. Follgwing high school he earned an A&B degree with Majors in History and English from Northeastern State College at,Tahlequah, OK, graduating in 1935. He did graduate work at the University of Southern California, later receiving a Master of Education degree from the University of Oklahoma. In 1936 Leo began his career in education, first teaching at Hoffman High School in Okmulgee County, then at Purcell High School. In 1940 he accepted a position with the,Putnam City School District in Oklahoma City. His career in education was interrupted in 1946 when he served as physical training officer with the United States Coast Guard stationed in Boston. After the war he returned to Putnam Caty Schools in 1945 as a teacher and coach, becoming high school principal in 1947. In l964 Mayfield became superintendent of the district, seeing it grow from 9,000 to 21,000 students during his 14-year tenure. Mayfield served as a professional educator for 39 years,(retiring in June of 1978. Education related activities include serving in retirement as a lobbyist for the School Administrators Association, vice president of the Oklahoma Education Association, President of the High School Principals Association, Presedent of the Oklahoma County Retired Teachers Association, and member of several evaluation teams for the North Central Association. In recognition of his service to public education, he was chosen as the first inductee in Putnam City Schools Wall of Fame. Civic activities over the years have included serving as the charter president of the Warr Acres Lions Club (now the Northwest Lions Club), membership in the Warr Acres Chamber of Commerce, and serving on the board of the Metropolitan YMCA. He served on the board of Community Bank and Trust for 25 years. He was an active member of Putnam City Christian Church, serving in many leadership positions over the years. He was also a lifetime member of American Legion Post 12. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Carl G. Mayfield, and the love of his life, Mary Ruth (Lovell) Mayfield, his wife of 50 years. He is survived by his daughter, Marilee Hattendorf and husband Charles of Edmond, son Cliff Mayfield and Nancy Duncan of Oklahoma City, grandson Douglas Hattendorf and wife Andrea of Mountain View, CA, and grandson Brian Hattendorf and Stacy Campbell of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by two great grandsons, Thaddius and Dillon Hattendorf of Oklahoma City, a great granddaughter, Stella Hattendorf of Mountain View, CA, sister Dixie Kahoe of Oklahoma City, several nieces and nephews and many dear and close friends. Leos family expresses grateful appreciation to the staffs at Bradford Village Assisted Living Center, Mission Hospice and Clare Bridge for their tender mercies and compassion during these past several years. Services will be Wednesday, December 30, 2:00 p.m. at New Covenant Christian Church, 12000 N. Rockwell, Oklahoma City.
