Obituary

Lena Ann Flynn was a legend in her family and in life. The 94-year-old will be remembered as a devout messenger of God and a lifelong caregiver whose generosity and earnestness rippled through everyone she met. She was born on Nov. 3, 1921 in Troy, NY to Charles and Carmela Castiglione. The oldest of five children, Lena knew the importance of hard work. However, family and faith always came first, values that will stand as her legacy. Straightforward and determined, Lena knew exactly what she wanted. For her, success was always possible as long as you were guided by faith. She would watch for divine signs and eventually stumbled upon Cardinals, a simple bird to signify big changes in her life. Strength defined this matriarch of a culturally rich family. She was stern and fearless, but also loving and supportive. Lena's success also spanned an admirable work life in health care. Before WWII, she was a secretary. When the war began, she entered the Army Air Corp as a nurse. She then took a reprieve as a mom, raising four children. When her husband passed, she worked as a manager for Braums in Oklahoma City. In the early 70s, Lena entered nursing school, which followed with a decades-long career at Integris Baptist Medical Center, where she worked in the burn ward and ICU. Devoted to helping people, she still volunteered even after retiring. Lena also had an unmistakable charm, which was revealed through a stunning talent to start conversations with total strangers and touch their lives. Clever adages, often comical, epitomized Lena's wisdom. "You can scratch like a chicken or soar like an eagle." It was simple advice, but powerful because it came from Lena. It didnt matter if you knew her. If someone heard about Lenas legacy, they loved her. Lena died Sept. 2, 2016 in Oklahoma City. Lena was preceded in death by her husband Bernard Michael Flynn, brother Joe, and sisters, Tina and Mary. She is survived by her brother Paul and his wife Jeanette; four children Joe, his wife Nancy; Michael, his wife Karina; Shannon, her husband Stephen; and Melanie, her husband Jay; 11 grandchildren Jennifer, her husband Joey; Angela, her husband Travis; Chrissie, her husband Marty; Bonnie, her husband Oli; Tegan; Stormy; Kelly; Farris; Asia; David; and Eva; and six great grandchildren Josie, Zach, Evan, Prudence, Grayson, and Garrett.
