Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" LaVerl Gray, age 85, departed from his life on earth to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, May 26, 2023 at his home with his loving wife of 55 years, Betty, by his side. He suffered from heart and Parkinsons Disease since 1999 until his death. He was born to William Clarence Gray and Edna Bell Olds Gray on August 3, 1937 in Mooreland, OK. He attended Mooreland schools and graduated in 1955. He then attended Panhandle State College. On December 1, 1956 Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force where he became a Tow Target Specialist at Vincent Air Force Base in Yuma, AZ. He served 4 years active duty as an Airman Second Class E-3 Private and was released with an Honorable Discharge. Larry moved to Woodward, OK where he worked at Oliver Shoe Store and was an Assistant Manager at Teds Western Wear. When he moved to Amarillo, TX in 1968, he started working for Santa Fe Railroad. He married Betty (Darr) Hall in Dalhart, TX on April 8, 1968. In 1988 the family transferred to Oklahoma City, OK where Larry worked for BNSF Railroad as a conductor for 30 years until he retired in 1999 due to poor health. Larry was an avid golfer and loved to play golf with his friends. During the past 20 years, Larry and his wife, Betty, were members of New Covenant Christian Church where they were active as Deacons and participated in many church activities and Bible studies. They developed many lifelong friends as a result. Larry also loved classical and opera music. His favorite artist was Andrea Bocelli. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roger, Floyd and Leroy; and sister, Edith. He is survived by the love of his life, Betty (Darr) Gray; three children from a previous marriage, Larry Gray, Jr., Patricia Gray, and Kimberly Gray; stepson, Jon K. Hall; and three adopted children, Charles Gray, Rosie Gray and Jessica Ward; ten grandchildren, Devin Hall, Raychel Williams, Trinity King, Anastasia Chilton, Sasha Pollock, Cordell Gray, Misty Burton, Lakota Burton, Karleeann Gray and Aerial Fazekas; 5 great-grandchildren, Maxine Hall, Sagan Hall, Ellis Hall, Lily Williams and Adalynn Dowell; 2 sisters, Marquita Scott of Enid, OK and Juanita Arthur and husband Butch of Yukon, OK; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to family, friends and Mercy Hospice nurses for their loving care of Larry during his hard-fought battle with Parkinsons disease. When his illness forced him to be confined to a hospital bed, his son Jon, along with Rebecca Smith and her two daughters, Tammy Watts and Tosha Watts were eager to help on a daily basis with anything that was needed.
