Larry King Killebrew, aka Dr. K, 75 years "young," died May 21, 2018, at home in bed. He was born January 9, 1943 in Muskogee, OK to James A. and Ada Olivia (Womack) Killebrew. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School and received his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma. He had a 3 handicap in golf and 2 holes-in-one. He was an avid fly fisherman, youngest father-son (Steve) doubles team to win the State Open, and on his last full round of golf with his son, Caleb, he made a 45-foot putt on the 18th green to beat him. He was a trivia and quotes guru. Anyone who knew Dr. K will know his love for quotes. Upon entering his home you'd find the quote framed and hung from Albert Einstein, reading "We all appear here uninvited, involuntarily for a short stay without ever knowing why." Although Mr. Einstein couldnt put his finger on mankind's reason for existence, Dr. K knew at an early age what his purpose was in this life. He was a self-made man, growing up poor with none of the advantages he bestowed upon his children. His children will forever be in awe of his grit and tenacity. By the age of 14 he knew he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up. He cleaned dishes as a side job, working his way through medical school. When it came to achieve his goals he set, he never left any stone unturned. In 1986, he opened the first dedicated womens imaging center in the state the Oklahoma Breast Care Center. He since launched a statewide mobile mammography program for women in rural areas, pioneered the states first image-guided, non-surgical breast biopsies and was among the first nationwide to embrace dedicated breast magnetic resonance imaging, which has a 98 percent ability to detect breast cancer early.
He was the recipient of the following awards: Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce Metro 50 Honoree, 2005, Inc. 5000 Award Honoree, 2007, Project Woman Coalition Pioneer Award, 2007, Journal Record Innovator of the Year Honoree, 2008. He belonged to the following clubs and organizations: The BLAC Inc. board, Cleats 4 Kids board, The American Medical Association, Oklahoma State Medical Association, Oklahoma County Medical Society, Greater Oklahoma City Radiological Society, Diplomate, American Board of Radiology, Society of Breast Imaging, and The National Consortium of Breast Centers.
In 2015, he married Audrey Jo Creswell. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; children, Steve Killebrew, Jacqueline "Lori" Woodington, Joanna Smith, Skylar Speaks, Caleb Killebrew; grandchildren, Alexis, Willow, Graham, Sunny, and Oliver.
