Obituary

LaReta Ann Walker, 96, went to be with her Jesus on December 31, 2022. She was born May 2, 1926 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Bertha and Jack Manning. LaReta grew up in Oklahoma City and Pryor, Oklahoma. Her most cherished titles were, "Mom," to her children and "Memaw," to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. LaReta worked as a medical and dental assistant in her professional years. She was a faithful attendee of The Baptist Temple since 1974. She served in childrens ministry, choir and The Womens Missionary Union. She also loved serving as a cabin counselor at Falls Creek to share the love of Jesusand probably to keep an eye on her sons. She volunteered for many years with Whiz Kids, encouraging struggling readers. LaReta cherished life and her family. She had the best laugh. She was a loving, feisty and powerful Matriarch. She also enjoyed dancing to big band and swing music. Nothing made her happier than rearranging furniture, a fresh coat of paint and asking her sons to help. Alas, her sons have still not recovered from those efforts. She was a master gardener, a gifted quilter, an enthusiastic crafter and an adventurous traveler. Some of her favorite places were Hawaii, Alaska, New England, Glorieta and Branson. Her best friend was her sister, Wanda. They loved garage-saling, churching, renting convertibles on vacation and hosting large gatherings. LaReta experienced massive heartache in her life. Nevertheless, she kept her faith and laughter in the face of unimaginable grief. She showed up for her family and served them with joy her entire life. She gave her talents, attention, and concern to those in need. She was a mother hen; always caring for others and wanting to be a reflection of Christ. She preached the gospel with her life. LaReta is survived by her brothers, Allen Hauenstein and wife Mary, and Jackie Manning and wife Judy; her children: Steve McCord, Florida; David McCord and Ana Stier, OKC; Lance McCord and wife, Joy, OKC; 4 children by marriage: Ron Walker, OKC; Susan Bridges, Edmond; Mark Walker and partner Jeffrey Meek, OKC; Gordon Walker and wife, Beverly.
