Kenneth Sherwood
Smith
Sep 10, 1936 — Feb 11, 2024
Kenneth Sherwood Smith passed away on February 11, 2024 in McAlester, Oklahoma. He was born on September 10, 1936 to Rudolph Percival Smith and Bessie Elizabeth (Huffman) Smith in Commerce, Missouri. Ken retired from his own company of Ten-Four, Inc. as an entrepreneur, running several businesses including a robust two-way radio sales company, storage facility and backyard Wildlife supply. Prior to this, he worked as a systems analyst at LeeWay motor freight. He was a proud veteran of the US Air Force and served from 1955-1960.
Ken grew up in Fredericktown, Missouri and loved to ride motorcycles and hang out with his Huffman and Darnell relatives. He married right out of high school and immediately joined the Air Force. He was stationed in El Paso, Texas at Biggs AFB as a personnel specialist. During his time in El Paso he loved to cross the border and eat Mexican food, go camping and ride dirt bikes in the desert. He talked about chasing coyotes with his BSA motorcycle. He left the Air Force to work at Texas Motor Freight, then Lee Way Motor freight, and transferred to Oklahoma City in 1966.
Divorced from first wife in 1970, he married Wana M. Smith in 1971 and added young ladies to his household. Lynn and Chryl (Wana's daughters) added a love and life to the masculine household. He loved supporting ALL of his children though their teen years and beyond. He loved hunting, fishing, and boating throughout his life. Wana and Ken loved boating and started spending time at Lake Ft. Gibson on a sailboat and a 28-foot wooden power boat. They had amazing times at the lake with family and friends. In his aged years he loved collecting cars and his favorite was a red 1963 Triumph TR3. It was his treasure! Lately, he loved going out to eat, especially for Philly Cheese Steaks, and enjoyed the outings with great joy.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved spouse of 50 years, Wana; sister, Wilma Darnell; daughter, Chyrl; and three grandchildren. He is survived by daughter, Lynn Roades; son, Kevin Smith; son, Emory Smith; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; along with many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.
