Kenneth A. Brokaw, Kenny to his family and oldest friends, was born in Anadarko, OK on Nov. 14, 1951 and died on Halloween night of 2018. He was preparing to give out the worlds largest pile of candy to trick or treaters but a freak choking accident suddenly took his life.
He grew up in Hinton, OK mainly but his family bounced around western Oklahoma and OKC during his childhood. His favorite childhood memories were the times he spent with his grandfather on the farm outside of Lookeba, OK and there in the kitchen with his grandmother learning how to make a superb fried chicken. Ken spent his senior year of high school at University High in Norman, OK where he was known as the poor but very brainy kid. These brains helped him choose to enlist in the Army to avoid the draft to the Vietnam war. The three years assigned to Germany learning to fire Pershing missiles opened the eyes of the Caddo County youth to experience the beauty of European historical places and museums. Once he returned to Oklahoma, he used the G.I. bill to complete a European history degree as a Phi Beta Kappa and then earn a J.D. from OUs Law School.
Ken was a hard worker. He always worked from the time he was a child asking for odd jobs all over Hinton like edging the grass of a local church by hand with scissors to sacking groceries at the Norman Safeway earning union wages. He was on his own from age 16 to adulthood.
Kens law career began at the feet of the legendary Rex Travis in OKC and focused on litigation of insurance defense cases. He was known as one of the best researchers and brief writers and could quote the exact case law in the statutes needed to win a defendants verdict. Plaintiff attorneys feared him, but he was ever the gentleman outside of the courtroom, willing to help young lawyers develop their intellectual curiosity and enjoy a beer with the opposing counsel once the case was decided.
As a young adult, Ken was devoted to helping his aging grandmother in Lookeba by faithfully driving her on weekends to get the lowest cost can of beans in Anadarko no matter his gas expense and patiently waited as they visited her younger sister on these trips. He was equally as supportive of his widowed mother-in-law, always willing to do odd jobs around her house. He missed these little old lady visits once they all died but continued to be a doting and loyal husband to Cassie for almost 21 years.
In his later years, he and Cassie experienced the world together taking some great trips from camping in CO to splurging on Big Cedar Lodge in MO where they spent their honeymoon. Life was sweet; and, he always said when his time was up, he would die a happy man for having lived a satisfying and full life. He was predeceased by his endeared grandparents and mother-in-law but is survived by his wife, Cassie Wilson of Bethany, many friends in the law profession and his dog and cat, Pearl and Frankie. Ken will be cremated under the direction of Mercer-Adams of Bethany, OK, and his ashes will be spread across some of his most favorite vacation spots. A memorial service will be planned by the family later in the month. In lieu of flowers, which he thought was a huge waste of money, please support your favorite charity, the State Parks of Oklahoma or Oklahomas Regional Food Bank in his memory.
