Obituary

Kathy Rivas, a beautiful and free spirit, died unexpectedly on April 24, 2016 at the young age of 35. Kathy was born on September 27, 1980 at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City to parents Charlotte and Ponceleon Varella. The youngest out of four children, she was loved and adored by her mother. They had a special bond that lasted until her mothers passing. She met her soul mate and life-long partner, Jorge Rivas, when they were only 14 while attending Harding Middle School. Kathy and Jorge became proud parents when Kathy gave birth to their son, Jorgie Rivas on March 21, 1997. Kathy and Jorge married on March 12, 1997 and spent 21 happy years together. Kathy started her career in the medical field as a nursing assistant at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. She continued her work as a certified nursing assistant at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital from 2002 until 2013. Kathy received her Associates Degree in Nursing on December 12, 2013, the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. She began her RN career at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City where she continued to work until the time of her death. Kathy loved camping, fishing, gardening, surfing, snowboarding, adventures with her Crazy Asian, watching movies with her son, and snuggling with her dogs. Above all, she loved her family. Her greatest achievement in life was raising her son and her proudest moment was watching him graduate from the United States Marine Corps. Kathy was a hilarious and uplifting person with an infectious laugh and a beautiful smile that lit up the room. She will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother, a compassionate nurse, a hard worker, and a loyal friend. She was preceded in death by her mother, Charlotte Roberts, and sister, Beverly Mines. She is survived by her husband, Jorge Rivas and son, Jorgie Rivas, as well as her brother, Scott Mines, aunt, Kathy Hampton, soul sister, Janet Trina and numerous extended family members.
