JUDITH ELIZABETH BARNES
Judith (Judy) Elizabeth Barnes, of Oklahoma City, stepped from this world into the loving arms of Jesus Christ while at home surrounded by her loving family on January 19, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. She was 72. Judy was born on May 24, 1944 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Louis and Verda Mae Auston. She was raised in Tulsa and graduated from Will Rogers High School. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee for one year before marrying the love of her life, Kent Barnes, in 1965 and they were married and walked through life as best friends for 52 years before her death. After getting married, she and Kent lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then Fort Smith, Arkansas and New Orleans, Louisiana before moving to Oklahoma City. During that time, she had four children and devoted her life to raising her family in a Christ-Centered home. She was a member of Council Road Baptist Church for 28 years and a member of Quail Springs Baptist Church for 12 years.
Judy had many passions in life. One of her primary passions was teaching young children about God and his Love. She was actively involved in the Preschool Ministry at Council Road Baptist Church and served as a Preschool educational consultant for the Capital Baptist Association, the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and the Southern Baptist Convention. She also served on the staff of the Glorieta Baptist Convention Center in New Mexico and the Ridgecrest Baptist Conference Center in North Carolina. She spent many years serving as a sponsor at Falls Creek Baptist Assembly and taught Vacation Bible School for many years. Her live was continually filled with service to others. In addition to her work with preschool children, she spent time volunteering at Sparks Hospital in Arkansas, providing assistance to unwed mothers in New Orleans, singing in the church choir in OKC and assisting with little league activities that her children were involved in. She was also a member of the Daughters of American Revolution.
Despite her other interests, Judys primary love was her family. The sacrifices she made in raising her kids were numerous and one of her greatest qualities was her faithfulness to God, her church, her husband, children, grandchildren and many friends. She even showed amazing love and devotion to her two rescued dogs, Happy and Lucky! In her later years, she remained active in the daily activities of her 11 grandchildren. She also loved to travel, and traveled throughout the United States and the Caribbean with her children and grandchildren. One of the highlights of her life occurred in the summer of 2015 when she and Kent took their four children, their spouses and all 11 grandchildren to the Florida Keys and Orlando for a week to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The Florida Keys may never be the same after that large groups visit!
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Verda Mae Auston and her brothers, William Glen Auston and James Louis Auston of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
