She graduated from high school in 1940 in Blackwell, Oklahoma where her father was pastoring the First Church of the Nazarene. She attended Bethany Peniel College, now Southern Nazarene University, and majored in music. She married James Forman in 1941 while they both were attending college. Joyce worked as a circulation clerk at Gadsden State Junior College (now University of Alabama-Gadsden) for eleven years. She also assisted in other areas of the library. Joyce was content to stay in the background, not wanting any recognition for anything she did. She had compassion for friends and loved ones, faithfully remembering them in prayer.
