Joseph Raymond O'Brien, 83, died April 27, 2015 in Oklahoma City. He was born August 16, 1931 in Trenton, New Jersey to Joseph and Mary (Alex) O'Brien. After graduation from high school, he attended Admiral Farragut Academy in New Jersey. He later joined the Navy, serving in the Seabees, in the Philippines. After his discharge from the Navy, he moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma State University. After OSU, he went to work for Huggin, Thomason and Ball. He became a draftsman and received his civil engineering training before beginning his career in February, 1971, with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. In July, 1986, he started with Division 4 in the Utilities Branch, as Project Branch Manager. Joe retired on May 31, 2002, after 31 years. During his career, he received many awards for his work on bridges, right/ways, and many other venues. Being an engineer at heart, Joe designed and built his own house. Due to his love of the outdoors, he spent many hours landscaping his property with plants and small building projects. More of Joe's interests were tennis, and snow skiing, in which he served as President of the OKC Ski Club for 3 years. Joe surrounded himself with many forms of art. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Irene Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Loretta Sue Lanham; 3 daughters, Terri Lynn Dawson Rushing and husband Bob of Kingston, OK, Sharon Kay Perry and husband Mark of Edmond, and Tammy Jo Anderson and husband Timothy of OKC; a sister, Bunny Reese of New Hope, PA; 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; and 3 nieces and 1 nephew. Viewing will be Friday, 9am-9pm, with family present from 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams. Service will be Saturday, May 2, 10:00am at Mercer-Adams Chapel with interment in Gracelawn Cemetery, Edmond, OK.
