Obituary

Joseph Raymond Carpenter, 89, was welcomed into Gods Heavenly Kingdom on September 10, 2022. He was born on May 5, 1933 in St Louis, MO to Chester Raymond Carpenter and Helen Josephine (Kipp) Carpenter. In 1947, Joe graduated from Piedmont Public School in Piedmont, MO. He began his college career but was drafted into the Army in December, 1953 where he excelled in the Artillery as a Radar Chief at Fort Bliss, TX. After being Honorably Discharged in 1955, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Murray State University. Joe was employed by Western Electric in NC, Bell Labs New Devices in NJ and Western Electric in TX and FL before being transferred to Oklahoma where he would finish his career. He retired as a Senior Engineer and Robotics International member from AT&T after 31 years with the company. In his 89 years, Joe was fortunate enough to have had several loves in his life. He was married to Sherry (Wheat), mother of Kevin, Kyle, and Kimberly, until Sherrys death 1974. He then married Shirley (Woolf, Hutchison) and a blended family was formed with her daughter, Sheryl, until Shirleys death in 2016. Most recently, he enjoyed the company of his special lady friend, Norma Pemberton. Joes favorite pastimes included spending time camping with The Nomads and King of the Road Roamers, traveling, fishing, leather working and storytelling. Joe enjoyed the southwest where he and Shirley spent winters escaping the Oklahoma cold. Most of all Joe loved spending time with family and friends and helping others. He was a member of the Bethany First Baptist Church. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Helen Carpenter; sister, Kay Bonney; brothers-in-law, Charles Woolf and Eddie Wheeler; and sister-in-law, Ida Gaye Bates. He is survived by brother-in-law, Robert Bonney; sisters-in-law, Charlene Woolf and Peggy Wheeler; children, Kevin Carpenter and wife Christine, Kyle Carpenter, Kimberly Carpenter and her special friend Jeff Rayhill, and Sheryl Lee and husband Rick; six grandchildren; Jacob Moore, Miranda (Moore) Jordan, Brian Carpenter, Sabrina Lee, Brooke Carpenter, Zachary Lee; a bonus grandchild, Gharrett Wheeler; and two great grandchildren. Norma Pemberton and a host of extended family and friends also survive him. Viewing will be at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service, Bethany, OK on Thursday, September 15, 2022 from 9:00 am-8:00 pm, with family present from 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2022, 10:00 am at Bethany First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at 12:30 pm in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. .
