Jonathan Timothy Gassett was born near Geary, Oklahoma on October 22, 1915. He was the fifth of ten children born to a share-crop farmer, William Henry Gassett and his Russian-born wife, Helena Marie (Peters) Gassett. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 5, 2014. Jonathan attended Oklahoma grade schools at Uncas, Webb City, Avant and Vera and graduated from Owasso High School in 1933. In 1934, Jonathan found the Lord as his Savior in a revival meeting at the altar of the Church of the Nazarene in Wellington, Kansas. He responded to a call to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. He attended and graduated from Bresee College, (later SNU) in Hutchinson, Kansas in preparation for full-time Christian ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. In September 1939, Jonathan married a college classmate, Bernadine Ames, in Ottawa, Kansas. Two daughters were born to them: Sherryl Elaine and Linda Jo. After 61 years of marriage, Bernadine passed away in August 2000 in Gainesville, Florida. In November 2001, Jonathan was united in marriage to Angelina Alger in Bethany, Oklahoma. Jonathan and Bernadine served pastorates in Kansas at Woodbine, Smith Center, Salina First and Hutchinson Peniel and in Oklahoma at Bethany Eastside. He then served for thirty years as district superintendent of three different Districts: Northwest Oklahoma, Upstate New York and North Florida. He represented these Districts as a delegate to eight quadrennial General Assemblies of the Church of the Nazarene. He was a member and secretary of the Boards of Trustees for Southern Nazarene University, Eastern Nazarene College, Trevecca Nazarene University and Nazarene Bible College. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Southern Nazarene University in 1964. He also served for five years at Nazarene Headquarters in Kansas City as the first full-time director of the Stewardship of Wills and Annuities (later Nazarene Foundation). Besides his wife, Bernadine, Jonathan was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Linda Jo, two sisters, Esther Olivey and Ruth Champney; five brothers, Paul, Silas, David, Cleophas and Stephen; half-sister, Elizabeth Margerum; and half-brother, Melvin L. Gassett. He is survived by his wife, Angelina; daughter, Sherryl Gordon of Rochester, NY; 3 grandsons, Steve McGinley and wife Mary of Kansas City, MO, Craig Irwin and wife Carrie of Livonia, NY, Brett Irwin of Colorado Springs, CO; great-grandson, Collin McGinley; brother, Elisha and wife Grace of Fresno, CA; sister, Hanna Creason of Lawton, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing will be Sunday, 11am-9pm, with family present from 3-5pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be Monday, November 10, 2:00pm at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Forest Meadows Memorial Cemetery, Gainesville, FL.
