An Edmond original, J. Kevin Smith was born November 11, 1954 in the Edmond Hospital, located on the second floor above the Broncho Theatre in downtown Edmond. He was seventh in a line of nine children born to Utah and Nathalie Smith. He attended grades K-12 in Edmond and was crowned Prom King in 1973. While still in high school he was the projectionist at the Woodstock Drive-In. After high school, Kevin served in the US Navy as a Missileman aboard the missile cruiser USS William H. Stanley.
Kevin married Johanna Rappsilber and together they had a son, Travis Smith. In 1983, Kevin joined the Edmond Fire Department. There he served as Edmond Firefighters Association President and Vice President. In that capacity he worked with local businesses to purchase car safety seats, bicycle helmets, and the first three cardiac defibrillators carried by the Edmond Fire Department. He held other jobs while working as a Firefighter. These included driving a tractor trailer for Braums, working as a medic for EMSA, and as a Private Investigator. He spent the last twenty years living a quiet life in Guthrie, where he was known to be a watchful protector to those in his neighborhood.
Kevin was preceded in death by parents, Utah and Nathalie; sister, Patsy Nelle; sister, Karen Smith Herwig; brother, Woody Smith; and nephew, Steve Smith.
He is survived by his son, Travis Smith; sister, Shay (Sharon) Caudle; and brothers, Jody, David, Gary, and Adam. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
A service in his memory will be held at 2:00pm, June 17 at the Waterloo Church of the Nazarene, 457 W Waterloo Road, Edmond OK. A private burial will be held at Grace Lawn Cemetery of Edmond.
