John Marvin Boyd was born on August 29, 1938 at Capitol Hill Hospital in south Oklahoma City. His dad surrendered to the ministry when John was 2 years old, so church was always a part of his life. Johns family moved several times when he was young, including to Ft. Worth, TX where his dad attended seminary. As a little boy John gave his life to Christ as Lord and Savior, in late September of 1945, at a fall revival in Corsicana, TX.
The Boyds moved to Cordell, OK in 1948 when John was in sixth grade. He was active in school band, chorus, playing basketball, baseball and football. They lived there until the summer of 1955. John spent his senior year in Anadarko, OK, where he made the basketball team and played baseball.
After high school graduation in 1956, John joined the Air Force. As he put it, "I was ready to get out on my own and make my own way. I was only 17 years old. I did take my Bible with me, but I didnt go to chapel very much." He served for 2 years as an Airborne Radio Operator and then went into Special Services as a part of a team that went from base to base playing competitive basketball with the soldiers, including playing in a game against the Harlem Globetrotters.
After being discharged from the Air Force in 1960, John came to Oklahoma City to find work. John said he got the job at Oklahoma Natural Gas mainly because he played baseball and they wanted him to play for their team in the old Industrial League.
John met Twila June Morrison on a blind date in October of that same year. They were married 6 months later. They werent attending church but as a young couple they knew they needed to. A friend from work invited them to 40th Street Baptist and they became very involved. They were later members of a few other churches in Oklahoma City, and as their family grew they eventually settled at Putnam City Baptist Church in 1970, where they would become long-time members.
After ONG, John worked for TG&Y in Accounts Payable for more than 20 years. He later became self-employed as an Independent Accounts Payable Auditor which required a lot of travel, especially to Memphis. He was gone from home about 50% of his time. It was one of the hardest times for John and Twila but also one of the best. John said this is when he began studying his Bible like never before and God began to convict his heart of many things.
This is also when John met a godly friend named Curtis who worked for one of his clients. He invited John to a weekly Christian Mens Lunch led by Adrian Rogers, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church. This was really a time of spiritual growth. John said, "I truly believe that God put these two men in my life, just when I needed them. God is good!"
Not long after that, John and Twila moved to Memphis for a time where they got involved in a great church and made great Christian friends. John counted it a blessing being a part of several great churches through the years.
But in 1994, they returned to Oklahoma City and have lived here ever since. Over the course of his life, John has been as active part of Putnam City Baptist Church for 47 years, serving in many leadership positions such as deacon, Bible teacher, and choir member. "Each time God has led us back home to Putnam City Baptist. This church has blessed our lives and weve been able to experience God in so many ways in our journey together."
In his retired years, John loved to volunteer and was a regular at Heart and Hand Thrift Store, repairing electronics and furniture. He was especially great at customer service. John never met a stranger.
John loved God, Gods Word and Gods people. But apart from his heart of the Lord, he deeply loved his family and was known for his faithfulness, sense of humor and the telling of his life stories. You may have had to search for the point, but you never missed the intention of his heart.
John stepped into glory on Thanksgiving morning, November 23, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Twila; sons, Johnny Jr. and wife Carrie of Ft. Smith, Jeff and wife Alison of OKC, Jerry and wife Nikki of Bixby, OK; daughter, Tara Matlock and husband Brian of OKC; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; older sister, Joyce Waddell and husband Kenneth of OKC; younger brother, Bob of Cleveland, OK; and a large extended family, and many, many friends he loved so much.
