Johnnie (John) Robert Spears was born at home on July 14th, 1934, to Grover Cleveland Spears and Naomi Mae (Alexander) Spears, the youngest of 10 children. He departed this earth suddenly on November 28th, 2015.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, four sisters, and his wife, Lois Spears. He is survived by two sons, Robert Spears and David Spears; Joy Evans, his sister; Joyce Porter, the mother of his children; two granddaughters, Lindsay Ebenhack and Rachel Talasaz; and three great-grandchildren, Macy, Mackenzie, and Noah Ebenhack. He is also survived by his step children, Mike and Rick Montgomery, Rhonda Bryan, their children, and Lottie Dorman, his best friend for the last ten years.
John graduated from Central State University and began a teaching career in 1963. He continued teaching until 1974. During that time he earned a masters degree in natural science from the University of Oklahoma. Many of his past students have expressed their appreciation for the impact he had on their lives.
In 1974, he took a position with a multi-national oil company and worked in West Africa for three years. In 1977, he returned to the United States and, in 1979, started his own business, Industrial Specialties in Oklahoma City. He continued to run the business until 1999, when his health caused him to sell the business to his sons, whom had worked with him for many years.
John spent the last fifteen years of his life caring for Lois, playing video poker at many casinos, and enjoying his great-grandchildren. He also volunteered as a docent at Sam Noble Museum. John was one of those people who made everyone around him just a little better. Many times he said his hobby was learning, and you could always engage him in a conversation about politics, local and world events, or OU sports. He will be missed as a father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, teacher, mentor, and confidant. He has touched many lives.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2:00pm at Mercer-Adams Chapel.
