Obituary

John Allyn Workun, 65, of Yukon, Oklahoma, passed away on May 13, 2025. Born on September 27, 1959 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he was a devoted husband to Karalee, a loving father to Zachary, Gharrett, and Kendell, beloved Papa to Isaiah, Gideon, Everlee, and Theo, treasured son of Allyn and Mettie Bell, and dedicated brother to Mettie Jane.

Growing up in Canada, John enjoyed seasons of snow and summers of dirt biking on the family farm in Edmonton. He held dear the many road trips he took with his parents and sister Mettie Jane, visiting family in the States, attending family camp at Glorieta in New Mexico, and touring the vast beauty of the United States. He moved to the States to attend Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Karalee. Together they moved to Yukon, Oklahoma to start careers and a family, and it was there that they raised three incredible children.

For decades, John was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Bethany, where he made the piano sing on Sunday mornings as accompanist, served as a deacon and on numerous committees, volunteered countless hours in the childrens' and youth ministries, sang mightily in the choir, delivered meals to widows and shut-ins, and drove the boat for countless youth and friends, teaching them to tube and water ski. If there was an opportunity to serve, John was there with a helping hand and a smile.

John joined the staff of Quail Creek Bank in 1993, where he served as a community banker, steadily working his way up to eventually become Executive Vice President/Chief Lending Officer. John delighted in this work, seeing his job as another extension of ministry with ongoing opportunities to serve and help in ways in which he was uniquely gifted to do so.

The great loves of John's life were Jesus and his family, and his love for both was always on full display. He made friends everywhere he went, and the family has often joked that they couldn't go anywhere without John running into someone he knew. If the love of Christ could be shown to anyone, he showed it. If his family needed anything, big or small, he was there. John always had many irons in the fire, but when he was with you, those irons became invisible. He was a man whose ultimate gift was presence. It is this presence that we will grieve most deeply but will strive to embody as a living legacy to him.

John's legacy lives on in his wife, Karalee; son, Zachary John (Karen); son, Gharrett Allyn (Sarah); daughter, Kendell Lee (Jon Rand); son, Josh; his beautiful grandchildren, Isaiah, Gideon, Everlee and Theo; and his sister, Mettie Jane Wiskar (husband Richard, son Ethan).

John was preceded in death by his father, Allyn Workun and his mother, Mettie Bell Workun.
