John Monroe
Metcalf, Jr.
Oct 5, 1938 — Dec 12, 2024
John Monroe Metcalf, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 12, 2024. He was born on October 5, 1938, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, to John Monroe Metcalf, Sr., and Edith J. (Collins) Metcalf. He spent his early years in his home town, then decided to further his education at Bethany Peniel College, now known as Southern Nazarene University. He achieved his BA in Physics while there and met the love of his life, Bobbie McAlister. They married in Sapulpa on June 3, 1960. They were married 64 years at the time of John's passing.
John immediately went to work for the J.C. Penney company right after he graduated. Having worked with them through high school, he moved up the ranks and eventually became a store manager over five different stores in Texas and New Mexico. He served for many years as Regional Vice President of Personnel, and he traveled to their New York headquarters weekly. In his 37 years of employment, he met Mr. Penney himself and traveled to many of the conventions and management meetings both in the United States and internationally. He achieved many awards for his management skills and knowledge of the J.C. Penney Company.
He and Bobbie attended Nazarene churches everywhere they lived, and he served on the board at each of them. John and Bobbie have been long time members of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. They were faithful attenders of the Reach Out Class and enjoyed the friendship of other class members. John served as the president of the class for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and their two sons: Kevin and wife, Melanie, of Bethany, Oklahoma; Keith and wife, Susan, of Piedmont, Oklahoma. They have four grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren: Kevin & Melanie's children: John Metcalf, and great grandchildren Trip and Poppy; and Jenny Hanger (husband John Paul) and great grandchildren Elijah and Ezra. Keith and Susan's sons: Steven Metcalf (wife, Alli) and great grandchildren Watson and Whitney; and Jake Metcalf (wife, Bethany) and great grandsons Jacob and Parker. They were all greatly loved by Grandpa (aka Papa John), and he was proud of each of them.
He was a Christian who trusted God and was consistent and faithful in his daily walk with Christ, devotions and prayer life. He leaves a wonderful Christian heritage to his family. John's life verse was Romans 8:28: "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose."
Services will be Monday, December 16, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. There will be a time of visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service in Bethany, Oklahoma.
John and Bobbie transitioned to Southern Plaza in 2021, and it was a great move for them. John enjoyed many friendships there and was loved by both residents and staff members. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to a project in memory of him. Southern Plaza, Attn: Metcalf Project, 3737 N. College, Bethany, OK 73008
